Winter Surfing at Sunset

A poem.

Winter surfing at sunset Off the California coast the golden sun is cold
听riding the lip of the earth. The wind drops
听to just a whisper of tomorrow's storm,
听in the lavendered east a twist of new moon hangs.
听A shadow slips out of the sun
听and I catch it. Standing as if on a rollicking train,
听I make a run for the shore
听slicing the wave in half.
听Peeling the wet suit听off
听it rolls down my body in shivering lurches
听gathering like black bark about my feet,
听my limbs white as a birch.
听As I dry off in the hopping cold
听watching the sea turn pewter,
听dolphins rise and fall, heading south.
