Coyote on a Winter's Eve

A poem.

Coyote on a winter's eve听The coyote glides into view, fluid
听and wary. Pale against the cedars
听he tracks along the slope,
听mapping its contour.
Sometimes on a winter's eve
听he finds scraps here. He mouths
听them on the trot, glancing over
听his shoulder at the house, not
trusting it for a minute. Inside,
听lights blink on and a young dog,
听warm behind the glass, barks
听a warning, wails his sudden
longing to lope off too,
听shoulder to shoulder, knowing
听deep in his bones how to match
听that wild gait.
