Night Watch

A poem.

Night Watch听I watch as the full, lucent moon rises
听and grows smaller in the soft gray sky.

My black cat is with me for a moment,
听hunched by my side.
听But shadows are deep tonight
听and he must dart into them,
听pawing after secrets,
听becoming one himself.

I am alone now,
听except for the creeping moon
听and twin pine trees
听as silent as myself.
