A Child鈥檚 Guide to the Night

A poem.

When evening begins to settle over the town
聽Windows turn pale yellow, the edges
聽Of bicycle spokes and outdoor grills soften,聽

And daylight lingers to bless the grass
聽And trees and transform a boy鈥檚 hand
聽Into gray before his eyes.

All creation is caught now
聽Between two worlds, a place
聽Where children long to stay 鈥

Even as their houses, like bulky ships,
聽Are casting off into the night, even
聽As their mothers are calling, calling them home.
