Birthday Poem听
The old girl stirs and rattles her tags
creaking down the stairs
听stiff and slow
听nature calls
听I slip out of the warmth of covers
听reluctantly following
听a pact we
听made
听years ago
听Caught in the wonder of the evening sky
听resplendent with stars
听perfectly aligned
听Above the dark chilled air
听I somnolently ponder
听light-years
听and time
听And how brief our shine here
听as she sniffs at the grass
听I'm thankful for this moment
听Under the swirl of the Milky Way
听more permanent and eternal
听than my old dog and I
