Grammy nominations include streaming-only music for first time

2017 Grammy Awards nominees have been announced, with new rules from the Recording Academy allowing works such as Chance the Rapper鈥檚 鈥淐oloring Book鈥� to be recognized.聽
Earlier this year, the Recording Academy announced that streaming-only works can now be nominated for Grammy Awards. Before then, work had to be able to be downloaded by a listener, if not available as a CD.聽
"Our trustees felt like ; it's been on our radar for a couple of years now," the Recording Academy's senior vice president of awards, Bill Freimuth, told Billboard in June. Updating the competition's rules "keeps us as current and as relevant as we can and it keeps the process dynamic," he said.聽
Thanks to the change, Chance the Rapper鈥檚 鈥淐oloring Book,鈥� which has been extremely well-received by critics, was eligible for such Grammy Awards as best rap album and best rap song. Chance the Rapper鈥檚 work received nods in both categories.聽
One of the qualifications for a streaming work to be Grammy nomination-worthy is that it has to have been released on a well-known streaming service that charges users for a subscription.聽
As for the Grammy nominees, the nominees for the album of the year award are Adele鈥檚 album 鈥�25,鈥� Beyonce鈥檚 鈥淟emonade,鈥� Justin Bieber鈥檚 鈥淧urpose,鈥� Drake鈥檚 鈥淰iews,鈥� and 鈥淎 Sailor鈥檚 Guide to Earth鈥� by Sturgill Simpson.
Adele and Beyonc茅 were also nominated in the record of the year category, with their songs 鈥淗ello鈥� and 鈥淔ormation,鈥� respectively, receiving nods. Meanwhile, the group Lukas Graham received a nomination for 鈥�7 Years,鈥� while Twenty One Pilots received a nod for 鈥淪tressed Out鈥� and Rihanna and Drake鈥檚 song 鈥淲ork鈥� was nominated for the prize.
In the song of the year category, Mike Posner received a nomination for 鈥淚 Took A Pill In Ibiza,鈥� while Mr. Bieber鈥檚 song 鈥淟ove Yourself,鈥� Lukas Graham鈥檚 鈥�7 Years,鈥� Beyonce鈥檚 鈥淔ormation,鈥� and Adele鈥檚 鈥淗ello鈥� were also nominated.聽
Adele鈥檚 鈥�25,鈥� Bieber鈥檚 鈥淧urpose,鈥� Ariana Grande鈥檚 鈥淒angerous Woman,鈥� Demi Lovato鈥檚 鈥淐onfident,鈥� and Sia鈥檚 鈥淭his Is Acting鈥� are nominated for best pop vocal album, while Blink-182鈥檚 鈥淐alifornia,鈥� Cage The Elephant鈥檚 鈥淭ell Me I鈥檓 Pretty,鈥� Gojira鈥檚 鈥淢agma,鈥� Panic! At The Disco鈥檚 鈥淒eath Of A Bachelor,鈥� and Weezer鈥檚 self-titled album are nominated for best rock album.聽
Flume鈥檚 鈥淪kin,鈥� Jean-Michel Jarre鈥檚 鈥淓lectronica 1: The Time Machine,鈥� Tycho鈥檚 鈥淓poch,鈥� Underworld鈥檚 鈥淏arbara Barbara, We Face A Shining Future,鈥� and Louie Vega鈥檚 鈥淟ouie Vega Starring鈥XVIII鈥� are nominated for best dance/electronic album and Bon Iver鈥檚 鈥�22, A Million,鈥� David Bowie鈥檚 鈥淏lackstar,鈥� PJ Harvey鈥檚 鈥淭he Hope Six Demolition Project,鈥� Iggy Pop鈥檚 鈥淧ost Pop Depression,鈥� and Radiohead鈥檚 鈥淎 Moon Shaped Pool鈥� are nominated for best alternative music album.聽
The nominees for best urban contemporary album are Beyonc茅鈥檚 鈥淟emonade,鈥� Gallant鈥檚 鈥淥logy,鈥� KING鈥檚 鈥淲e Are King,鈥� Anderson .Paak鈥檚 鈥淢alibu,鈥� and Rihanna鈥檚 鈥淎nti,鈥� while the nominees for best rap album are Chance the Rapper鈥檚 鈥淐oloring Book,鈥� De La Soul鈥檚 鈥淎nd The Anonymous Nobody,鈥� DJ Khaled鈥檚 鈥淢ajor Key,鈥� Drake鈥檚 鈥淰iews,鈥� ScHoolboy Q鈥檚 鈥淏lank Face LP,鈥� and Kanye West鈥檚 鈥淭he Life of Pablo.鈥澛�
