Lady Gaga will be the latest star to carpool with late-night host James Corden. Her appearance comes on the heels of the release of her new album, which is a musical departure for the star and which is receiving mixed reviews from critics.

Ms. Gaga is scheduled to be on the Tuesday Oct. 25 episode of Mr. Corden鈥檚 CBS program 鈥淭he Late Late Show.鈥� The program鈥檚 鈥淐arpool Karaoke鈥� segment, in which Corden appears with celebrities and sings along to music, has become quite popular, with a segment involving Adele, for example, drawing more than 130 million views on YouTube.聽

Gaga has released such albums as 2009鈥檚 鈥淭he Fame Monster鈥� and 2013鈥檚 鈥淎rtpop.鈥� Her most recent work, 鈥淛oanne,鈥� was released on Oct. 21.

So far, the new album is garnering mixed reviews from critics. The publication NME was among the most positive, with giving Gaga's latest four stars out of five:

Weirdness and wonder abound 鈥� if the tracklist is wide-ranging, it鈥檚 admirably concise 鈥� There is a real raw heart to 鈥楯oanne,鈥� too: the title track 鈥� is a leavetaking song of great, simple beauty, more tenderly affecting than anything Gaga鈥檚 done before 鈥� The rest of the album too, rings with urges for us to take care of each other in a cruel world 鈥� It鈥檚 a simple, warm and vital message.鈥�

And for anyone out there who might carry a torch for Paula Cole, there's "John Wayne," where Gaga wonders where all the cowboys have gone.聽

Mr. Sheffield聽goes on to write that the song 鈥淪inner鈥檚 Prayer鈥� is a 鈥渉ands-down highlight.鈥� 鈥淔or all of its hits and misses, 鈥楯oanne鈥� is a welcome reminder of why the world needs her around.鈥澛�

Yet wrote that there are 鈥渟ome gorgeous pieces鈥� but that 鈥渋f she鈥檚 acting, as usual, then what鈥檚 the message of the play? 鈥� other songs, for all their vivid sonic color, lack strong stories. 鈥楢-Yo,鈥� 鈥楯ohn Wayne,鈥� and 鈥楽inner鈥檚 Prayer鈥� feel like mere stylistic exercises in a way that Gaga鈥檚 earlier stuff never did.鈥�
