Singer Lady Gaga has released a new song, 鈥淧erfect Illusion,鈥� that is being noted for its rock influences, showing that the genre is still part of popular music despite other styles' apparent dominance on the charts.聽

Ms. Gaga鈥檚 song was released on Sept. 8. The singer released hit songs such as 鈥淏ad Romance鈥� and 鈥淧aparazzi鈥� in the late 2000s, and her most recent solo album was 2013鈥檚 鈥淎rtpop.鈥� The singer also released 鈥淐heek to Cheek,鈥� a collaboration with singer Tony Bennett, soon after.聽

Since then, Gaga has also released the song 鈥淭il It Happens to You,鈥� which accompanied the 2015 documentary 鈥淭he Hunting Ground,鈥� which discusses rape on college campuses. The track was nominated for best original song at the Oscars.

Some critics are noting the rock 鈥榥鈥� roll influence on 鈥淚llusion.鈥� , for example, writes that on聽the new song, 鈥淟ady Gaga flexes her rock and roll voice 鈥�. Unlike 2013鈥檚 鈥楢rtpop,鈥� Gaga鈥檚 latest incorporates elements of stadium rock into her pounding dance pop template.鈥�

The old idea of a rock group may be rarer in popular music these days. Monitor staff writer Mark Guarino wrote in 2014 that rock and roll 鈥�appears to be in serious decline.鈥� Earlier this year,聽Rolling Stone writer Christopher R. Weingarten聽called rock 鈥渁 genre that, in its 65th聽year, is still beloved by millions but .鈥�

Yet the influence of rock 鈥榥鈥� roll is still being seen in pop music like Gaga鈥檚 newest track, with Ms. Geffen comparing the sound of 鈥淚llusion鈥� to music by British rock band Queen.

Meanwhile, Twenty One Pilots, the duo who currently have two hit songs in the top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100, mix "angsty lyrics, Macklemore-style rhymes, Ben Folds鈥搇ike piano pop, 311-ish reggae beats, hard-rock energy and the occasional ukulele ballad," as聽聽described them.聽

And wrote of music by The Chainsmokers, a DJ duo who also have two hits in the top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100 right now, 鈥淸The Chainsmokers鈥� songs are] inspired by the intimate strains of indie rock and bedroom electronica.鈥�
