'Rodin' struggles with depicting the life of an artist

It is, of course, quite difficult to make a good movie about artists. The process of creating art, after all, is notoriously聽uncinematic, especially if we鈥檙e talking about writers. (Last week鈥檚 鈥淢ary Shelley鈥 is a case in point.) This hurdle doesn鈥檛 stop filmmakers from trying, and I suppose they should keep at it.
But 鈥淩odin,鈥 directed by Jacques Doillon and starring Vincent Lindon as the great Parisian sculptor, does not, to put it charitably, add to the very small roster of Great Artist movies (such as 鈥淟ust for Life鈥 and 鈥淰incent & Theo鈥). Neither, to take two recent examples, did 鈥淩enoir鈥 (2012) or 鈥淐ezanne et Moi鈥 (2016), but at least those films ventured into the great outdoors and attempted to mimic the painters鈥 palettes. 鈥淩odin,鈥 by contrast, is a cooped-up slog. Grade: C (This movie is not rated.)
