The 鈥淗arry Potter鈥� spin-off film 鈥淔antastic Beasts and Where to Find Them鈥� has grossed more than $500 million worldwide after being released in mid-November.聽

鈥淔antastic,鈥� which takes place in the world of the successful 鈥淗arry Potter鈥� series but is set decades earlier, stars Eddie Redmayne as Newt Scamander, an expert on magical creatures who travels to New York. The movie co-stars Katherine Waterston, Colin Farrell, and Alison Sudol.聽

The movie was released on Nov. 18 and placed second at the domestic box office over Thanksgiving weekend, coming in behind the Disney animated movie 鈥淢oana.鈥� 鈥淔antastic鈥� took in about $65 million domestically over the five-day weekend.

found its second-week performance impressive, writing that the movie鈥檚 鈥渢hree-day haul dropp[ed] by just 39.4 percent to $45.1 million.鈥�

With its roots in the fictional world created by J.K. Rowling, the box office results for 鈥淔antastic鈥� are inevitably compared to those of the 鈥淗arry Potter鈥� films. How does 鈥淔antastic鈥� compare so far?聽

The highest-grossing 鈥淧otter鈥� movie was the last one, 鈥淗arry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2,鈥� which was released in 2011.

鈥淗allows鈥� did reach the $500 million mark faster than 鈥淔antastic,鈥� with 鈥淗allows鈥� hitting the number on its sixth day of release. By comparison, it took 鈥淔antastic,鈥� which officially achieved that on Nov. 29, 11 days to do so.聽

But 鈥淔antastic鈥� is still doing well financially. 鈥淭he movie is bringing in big dollars at the box office and has passed a major milestone,鈥� wrote of the news that 鈥淔antastic鈥� has achieved $500 million so far.聽

And wrote of the movie鈥檚 box office performance in comparison to 鈥淧otter鈥� that 鈥淧otter鈥� had incredibly popular source material on which to draw. 鈥淔antastic,鈥� by comparison, is based on characters that are unknown to audiences.聽

鈥淭he lower-than-鈥楶otter鈥�-projected opening for 鈥楩antastic Beasts鈥� can also be attributed to the fact that the pic isn鈥檛 based on a multi-global bestselling book series,鈥� Mr. D鈥橝lessandro and Ms. Tartaglione wrote prior to the movie鈥檚 release.

Beasts received good reviews from critics too. It's got a e among top critics on Rotten Tomatoes. But 海角大神's film critic聽Peter Ranier wasn't particularly effusive with his praise. 聽

Rowling has a voluminous imagination and Yates keeps things humming along, although, as was also true of many 鈥淧otter鈥� movies, there is often too much of a good thing. But the film is fine enough to make you forgive, if not forget, the fact that it exists primarily as a corporate enterprise and not as an imaginative tour de force.聽Grade:聽B
