Comedian Bill Murray became the newest recipient of the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor, putting forth a message of love during his acceptance speech.聽

In addition to starring in such classic comedies as 鈥淕hostbusters,鈥� 鈥淐addyshack,鈥� and 鈥淕roundhog Day,鈥� among many others, Mr. Murray has recently appeared in such films as the 鈥�Ghostbusters鈥� remake that was released this summer, the 鈥淛ungle Book鈥� film that also came out earlier this year, and the 2015 TV special 鈥淎 Very Murray Christmas.鈥澛�

Murray was nominated for an Oscar for Best Actor for his appearance in the 2003 movie 鈥淟ost in Translation.鈥澛�

During his acceptance speech Sunday evening, about the positive relationships he has had with his family and with his co-workers.

鈥淭here鈥檚 love,鈥� he said. 鈥淭hat's what we came with, that's what we go with. 鈥業 love you,鈥� let's try to repeat that to each other.鈥澛�

Stars including Jimmy Kimmel of the ABC late-night show 鈥淛immy Kimmel Live!,鈥� actor Steve Martin of 鈥淗ome,鈥� 鈥淪aturday Night Live鈥� co-star Jane Curtin, and 鈥淢aster of None鈥� actor Aziz Ansari discussed the actor鈥檚 career during the ceremony held at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington D.C..

, who聽has called 鈥淕roundhog Day鈥� 鈥渢he perfect comedy,鈥� wrote that much of that film鈥檚 success can be attributed to its star. When Mr. Gilbey rewatched the film at a movie theater, the audience 鈥渉ung on Murray鈥檚 every poisonous putdown,鈥� he wrote.

His performances since then, from his collaborations with Wes Anderson 鈥� to his Oscar-nominated turn in Sofia Coppola鈥檚 鈥楲ost in Translation,鈥� each have as their springboard 鈥楪roundhog Day.鈥� Before that, Murray was seen largely as a clown. After it, he was a complex actor with range.鈥澛�

Murray is the latest former star of the NBC variety program 鈥淪aturday Night Live鈥� to receive the Mark Twain Prize. Within the past seven years, four of the recipients starred on 鈥淪NL,鈥� showing the continuing ability of the decades-old TV show to make its stars into household names. (Some of those recipients include the 2015 honoree, Eddie Murphy; the 2011 honoree, Will Ferrell; and the 2010 honoree, Tina Fey.)聽

鈥淪NL鈥� creator Lorne Michaels was given the prize himself in 2004.聽

More women have received the prize in the past several years as well. Between 1998 and 2009, two women 鈥� Whoopi Goldberg and Lily Tomlin 鈥� were the honorees out of 12 recipients total. But in the past seven years, three women received the Mark Twain Prize: Ms. Fey, Ellen DeGeneres, and Carol Burnett.
