Alicia Silverstone: new poster mommy for pre-chewing baby food?
Loading...
It鈥檚 been a few weeks now since we wrote about 鈥Clueless鈥 star Alicia Silverstone and her habit of pre-chewing food for her then 10-month-old son, Bear Blu, and feeding him out of her own mouth.
At the time, a video of Silverstone鈥檚 mamma bird feeding had gone viral after the actress posted it on her own site, The Kind Life.听
The Internet community has been buzzing 鈥 and gagging 鈥 ever since, with comments ranging from the 鈥渆ww鈥 to the 鈥済ross.鈥 (And with some听 moms jumping in to defend Silverstone's technique, as well.)
Now, Silverstone herself has responded to the criticism of premastication. (Yes, the practice has a more official name than 鈥渂aby birding.鈥)
鈥淚 can understand that it would make some people feel uncomfortable, possibly, because it鈥檚 new to them,鈥 Silverstone told 鈥Entertainment Tonight鈥 recently.听 鈥淏ut I do want to let you know that this has been going on for thousands of years 鈥 still going on all over the place 鈥 and it鈥檚 natural.鈥
Indeed, in the 2010 issue of the journal Maternal & Child Nutrition, researchers argued that premastication plays a crucial role in infant health, and that it鈥檚 relatively recent abandonment 鈥 particularly in poor societies 鈥 is a significant threat to infant nutrition.听 Pre-chewing food, many researchers say, helps give weaning infants iron, increased immunity and improved digestion.
As Silverstone said on the show: 鈥淚t鈥檚 a part of the weaning process, so while I鈥檓 still breastfeeding, it鈥檚 just a way to introduce him to food.鈥
Some critics, on the other hand, worry about the health impacts premastication. They say pre-chewing food for babies could transmit disease 鈥 and worry, in particular, about the HIV virus.
Silverstone says she never imagined the video would garner as wide a viewership or reaction as it has.听 But she says she鈥檚 happy it鈥檚 out there.
And sure 鈥 nothing like a good debate over baby feeding techniques. (Check the mommy chat rooms if you want more.)听 But let's not forget that there are many more issues out there that probably deserve more debate and attention.听 Even in the realm of food.听
Consider, or instance:
- New research in the journal 鈥淔ood Chemistry鈥 from scientists in the UK says leading commercial brands of baby food may be seriously lacking in nutritional benefits.听
- More than 12.5 million children and adolescents are obese, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
- A quarter of 2-3 year olds don鈥檛 eat a single serving of fruit a day, and 30 percent don鈥檛 eat a single serving of vegetables, according to findings in the Journal of the American Dietetic Association.

So I say, go ahead and chew, Alicia.听
