Director Woody Allen鈥檚 newest film, 鈥淐af茅 Society,鈥� is set to open the 2016 Cannes Film Festival.聽

Mr. Allen鈥檚 movies have opened the festival before, with 2011鈥檚 鈥淢idnight in Paris鈥� and 2002鈥檚 鈥淗ollywood Ending鈥� becoming the first movies to screen at the international film festival in the respective years.聽

Allen鈥檚 鈥淐af茅鈥� will continue the pattern established by the director of releasing a movie a year, with recent other works by the helmer including 鈥淚rrational Man,鈥� 鈥淢agic in the Moonlight,鈥� and 鈥淏lue Jasmine.鈥� Allen usually writes his films as well.

鈥淐af茅鈥� stars Jesse Eisenberg of 鈥淏atman v Superman鈥� as a young man living in Hollywood in the 1930s. The movie co-stars Kristen Stewart, Steve Carell, Blake Lively, Parker Posey, and Corey Stoll.聽

The film is being released in the U.S. by Amazon, with which Allen is also working on a TV show.

鈥淐af茅鈥� opening the Cannes Film Festival will be the first time that a movie being released by the company has earned such a spot.

The last few years have seen relatively new TV and movie producers like Amazon and Netflix releasing programming that has earned accolades previously reserved for films or TV shows released by traditional studios.聽

Amazon has found critical acclaim with its TV series 鈥淭ransparent鈥� and 鈥淢ozart in the Jungle,鈥� while programs like 鈥淏osch鈥� have also proven popular.

Netflix rose to fame with original TV programming like 鈥淗ouse of Cards鈥� and 鈥淥range Is the New Black.鈥�

Now original movies produced by Amazon include director Spike Lee鈥檚 鈥淐hi-Raq鈥� and the upcoming movie 鈥淓lvis & Nixon,鈥� starring Michael Shannon and Kevin Spacey.

Netflix released the original movie 鈥淏easts of No Nation鈥� last year, which was critically acclaimed and thought to be a possible Oscars contender, though it missed out on nominations. Other original movies released by Netflix include the Adam Sandler comedy 鈥淭he Ridiculous 6,鈥� the sequel 鈥淐rouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: Sword of Destiny,鈥� and the Paul Reubens movie 鈥淧ee-wee鈥檚 Big Holiday.鈥�
