New 'Finding Dory' trailer: What made 'Nemo' such a hit?

'Finding Dory,' a sequel to the 2003 smash hit 'Finding Nemo,' comes out this June. What helped the original movie do so well at the box office?

A new trailer has been released for the Pixar film 鈥淔inding Dory,鈥 a 鈥淔inding Nemo鈥 sequel that is scheduled to be released this June.

鈥淒ory鈥 features the return of 鈥淣emo鈥 actors Ellen DeGeneres (Dory) and Albert Brooks (Marlin) as well as new additions such as Kaitlin Olson, Ty Burrell, Diane Keaton, and Ed O鈥橬eill.

The film centers on Dory鈥檚 efforts to find her family as well as encountering old friends and, judging from the trailer, also meeting some humans.

With 鈥淒ory,鈥 Pixar has crafted a sequel to one of its biggest hits, a movie that is still one of the studio鈥檚 highest-grossing films more than 10 years later. (Only 鈥淚nside Out鈥 and 鈥淭oy Story 3鈥 have made more domestically than 鈥淣emo.鈥)

What made the fishy film such a big hit when it was released in the summer of 2003?聽

Release date certainly helped. 鈥淔inding Nemo,鈥 鈥淚nside Out,鈥 and 鈥淭oy Story 3鈥 were all released in the summer, a time of year when parents are no doubt looking for an all-ages feature. It鈥檚 not until you get to the sixth-highest-grossing Pixar movie, 鈥淭he Incredibles,鈥 that you find one that didn鈥檛 open during the warmer months.聽

Against a backdrop of action-filled movies, a Pixar movie can stand out as something different. 鈥淚nside鈥 proved to be a steady performer during the summer, even coming in at number one during the competitive July 4 weekend.聽

Media analyst聽Paul Dergarabedian told Variety at the time that newer movies like 鈥淭erminator: Genisys鈥 found it difficult going against 鈥淚nside鈥 and 鈥淛urassic World.鈥

"Those two holdover films are tough to open against because they are still drawing all demographics,鈥 he explained.

Critical acclaim also contributed to the success of 鈥淣emo,鈥 which later won the Oscar for Best Animated Movie.聽As Gregory M. Lamb wrote at the time聽for 海角大神, " 'Finding Nemo' is going to make a big splash with young children. And parents or grandparents who dive in with them are likely to have a great time, too鈥 [an] animated delight."聽

Steve Jobs, the CEO of Pixar when "Nemo" was released, also pointed out that Pixar's "brand" had become a selling point,聽 noted at the time.

The studio had already released both 鈥淭oy Story鈥 and its sequel as well as the popular film 鈥淢onsters, Inc.,鈥 among other successful movies.
