Big winners at this year鈥檚 Screen Actors Guild Awards included the cast of the newspaper drama 鈥淪potlight,鈥� 鈥淭he Revenant鈥� actor Leonardo DiCaprio, and Brie Larson of 鈥淩oom.鈥�

The SAG Awards were held on Jan. 30 and also included a lifetime achievement award being bestowed on comedian Carol Burnett. Other winners in the film acting categories included Alicia Vikander, who took the best supporting actress award for her work in 鈥淭he Danish Girl,鈥� and Idris Elba, who won for best supporting actor for 鈥淏easts of No Nation鈥� (he鈥檚 not nominated at this year鈥檚 Oscars).

The award for best performance by an ensemble in a TV drama series went to the actors on 鈥淒ownton Abbey,鈥� while those who appear on 鈥淥range Is the New Black鈥� won the award for best performance by an ensemble in a comedy series.聽

鈥淗ow to Get Away With Murder鈥� actress Viola Davis won the best actress in a drama series prize, while Kevin Spacey of 鈥淗ouse of Cards鈥� won the best actor in a drama award.聽

鈥淥range鈥� snagged another victory with Uzo Aduba鈥檚 win in the best actress in a comedy series category, while Jeffrey Tambor won the best actor in a comedy series award for 鈥淭ransparent.鈥澛�

As with some other awards ceremonies, the SAG Awards can occasionally give indicators as to who will win what big prize when it comes to Oscars night.聽

But with the guild deciding to name the cast of 鈥淪potlight鈥� as the best cast performance 鈥� the SAG Awards equivalent of Best Picture 鈥� many industry watchers are more confused than ever.聽

Before now, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association named 鈥淭he Revenant鈥� the best drama film of the year at the Golden Globes and 鈥淭he Martian鈥� the best comedy. The Producers Guild of America named the movie 鈥淭he Big Short鈥� the best picture last month. And now the SAG named 鈥淪potlight鈥� as their own best picture.聽

鈥淭he signs are pointing all over the place,鈥� wrote, while wrote, 鈥淲e have an Oscars race, folks!... it鈥檚 still too close to call.鈥澛�

Meanwhile, wrote, 鈥淭he race for the Best Picture Oscar remains about as wide open as it has聽ever聽been at this point in the game.鈥�

While there are no doubt many factors at work, how different the various contenders such as 鈥淪potlight,鈥� 鈥淭he Revenant,鈥� and 鈥淭he Big Short鈥� are may be a factor in the support each are receiving. It's been seen before when, for example, the special effects-heavy space-set drama "Gravity" and the harrowing film "12 Years a Slave" were viewed as the top contenders for the Best Picture Oscar in 2014.
