Oscar nominees for this year include such films as 鈥淪potlight,鈥� 鈥淩oom,鈥� 鈥淭he Martian,鈥� and 鈥淢ad Max: Fury Road.鈥�

The nominees for the Best Picture prize, which will be given out at a ceremony on Feb. 28, are 鈥淪potlight,鈥� 鈥淩oom,鈥� 鈥淭he Revenant,鈥� 鈥淭he Martian,鈥� 鈥淢ad Max: Fury Road,鈥� 鈥淏rooklyn,鈥� 鈥淏ridge of Spies,鈥� and 鈥淭he Big Short.鈥�

鈥淪potlight,鈥� 鈥淩oom,鈥� 鈥淩evenant,鈥� 鈥淪hort,鈥� 鈥淢artian,鈥� and 鈥淢ax鈥� were all nominated for the Golden Globe best picture prizes and 鈥淪hort鈥� and 鈥淪potlight鈥� were nominated for the best cast award at the Screen Actors Guild Awards, so the inclusion of these movies was thought to be a good bet. 鈥淏ridge鈥� had lost some momentum lately but managed to get a Best Picture nomination, as did 鈥淏rooklyn.鈥澛�

Nominees for the best actress award are Saoirse Ronan of 鈥淏rooklyn,鈥� 鈥�45 Years鈥� actress Charlotte Rampling, 鈥淛oy鈥� actress Jennifer Lawrence, 鈥淩oom鈥� actress Brie Larson, and 鈥淐arol鈥� actress Cate Blanchett.

Blanchett, Larson, and Ronan were nominated for the best actress Golden Globe, so they had a good chance of getting an Oscar nod. Lawrence was nominated for (and won) the best actress in a comedy Golden Globe, so she鈥檚 been nominated before this season. Rampling had missed out on both the Golden Globe and SAG nominations, so her nod is a bit more of a surprise.聽

The best actor nominees are 鈥淭he Danish Girl鈥� actor Eddie Redmayne, 鈥淪teve Jobs鈥� actor Michael Fassbender, Leonardo DiCaprio of 鈥淭he Revenant,鈥� 鈥淭he Martian鈥� actor Matt Damon, and Bryan Cranston of 鈥淭rumbo."聽

This list lines up almost exactly with the Golden Globe nominees for best actor in a drama and with the SAG nominees for best actor, with Will Smith for 鈥淐oncussion鈥� and Johnny Depp for 鈥淏lack Mass鈥� being swapped out for Damon. Damon just won the best actor in a comedy Golden Globe.聽

Those competing for the best supporting actress prize are Kate Winslet of 鈥淪teve Jobs,鈥� Alicia Vikander for 鈥淭he Danish Girl,鈥� Rachel McAdams for 鈥淪potlight,鈥� Rooney Mara for 鈥淐arol,鈥� and 鈥淭he Hateful Eight鈥� actress Jennifer Jason Leigh.

Winslet, Leigh, Mara, and Vikander had been nominated for Golden Globes and Mara, McAdams, Vikander, and Winslet had been nominated for the SAG supporting actress award. This category lined up with previous nominations.

Those who are nominated for the best supporting actor award are 鈥淐reed鈥� actor Sylvester Stallone, 鈥淏ridge of Spies鈥� actor Mark Rylance, 鈥淪potlight鈥� actor Mark Ruffalo, 鈥淭he Revenant鈥� actor Tom Hardy, and 海角大神 Bale of 鈥淭he Big Short.鈥澛�

Stallone, Rylance, and Bale were nominated for Golden Globes and Bale and Rylance were nominated for SAG Awards. The surprises here were Hardy and Ruffalo.

Meanwhile, those facing off for the best director award are Tom McCarthy for 鈥淪potlight,鈥� Lenny Abrahamson for 鈥淩oom,鈥� Alejandro Gonz谩lez I帽谩rritu for 鈥淭he Revenant,鈥� George Miller for 鈥淢ad Max: Fury Road,鈥� and Adam McKay for 鈥淭he Big Short.鈥澛�

Two high-profile science fiction movies are competing for the Best Picture award this year, 鈥淢ax鈥� and 鈥淢artian.鈥� Movies like the original 1977 鈥淪tar Wars鈥� film, 鈥淎vatar,鈥� and 鈥淕ravity鈥� have been nominated, but no sci-fi movie has ever taken the prize.聽

We鈥檒l see how 鈥淢ax鈥� and 鈥淢artian鈥� do as the awards season goes on 鈥� 鈥淩evenant鈥� just won the Golden Globe drama award against 鈥淢ax,鈥� though 鈥淢artian鈥� was in a different category and won the best comedy prize.

But the Academy picking one of those movies as Best Picture would line up with how audiences appreciate science fiction movies, if moviegoers voting with their wallets is any indication. 鈥淢ax鈥� and 鈥淢artian鈥� were two of the highest-grossing movies of the year, with 鈥淢artian鈥� doing particularly well.聽

Of the incredibly popular Marvel movies, 2014鈥檚 space-set 鈥淕uardians of the Galaxy鈥� became one of the highest-grossing of that year.聽

Meanwhile, 鈥淎vatar鈥� was recently dethroned as the highest-grossing film domestically of all time, not adjusting for inflation.

What took its place? The science fiction smash 鈥淪tar Wars: The Force Awakens.鈥�
