Pixar has released a new trailer for its upcoming animated sequel, 鈥淔inding Dory.鈥澛�

Fans of Pixar鈥檚 2003 movie 鈥淔inding Nemo鈥� know that fish Dory (voiced by Ellen DeGeneres) has trouble remembering things. In the new movie, though, something has come back to her. She remembers, 鈥淢y family 鈥� they鈥檙e out there somewhere.鈥澛�

The trailer also shows that Dory has a habit of 鈥渟leep-swimming,鈥� which means neighbors Marlon (Albert Brooks) and Nemo (Hayden Rolence) have to keep an eye on her.

The film will also star Diane Keaton, Idris Elba, Dominic West, and 鈥淢odern Family鈥� stars Ed O鈥橬eill and Ty Burrell.

鈥淔inding Nemo鈥� was a relatively early release for the studio. Before 2003, Pixar had released 鈥淭oy Story鈥� and 鈥淭oy Story 2,鈥� both box office hits and hits with reviewers, as well as 鈥淎 Bug鈥檚 Life,鈥� which had a modest box office gross and a mixed critical reception. 鈥淢onsters, Inc.鈥� had also come out and done quite well at the box office and with critics.聽

鈥淣emo,鈥� however, blew the others out of the water (sorry). It became the highest-grossing Pixar film released so far and was the highest-grossing computer animated movie of all time until 鈥淪hrek 2鈥� came along the next summer.聽

Pixar rode this wave of success (all right, I鈥檒l stop) over the next several years. 鈥淭he Incredibles,鈥� 鈥淲ALL-E,鈥� and 鈥淯p鈥� were all rapturously received (鈥淯p鈥� became the first animated movie to be nominated for the Best Picture Oscar since 1991鈥檚 鈥淏eauty and the Beast,鈥� though it was also released in a year in which the Academy increased the amount of films that could receive that honor). 鈥淩atatouille鈥� was a more modest performer, but by no means a failure and was a big hit with critics. 鈥淐ars鈥� got a more mixed critical reception, but did well at the box office.聽

Then another smash came with 鈥淭oy Story 3,鈥� which was released in 2010 and is still the highest-grossing movie released by Pixar. 鈥淭oy鈥� also earned a Best Picture nod.聽

Pixar entered a slight slump after 鈥淭oy,鈥� however 鈥� a string of performers that might have been fine at other animation studios but was a low point for the great results Hollywood is used to from Pixar. 鈥淐ars 2鈥� was a critical misfire and is one of Pixar鈥檚 lowest box office performers, the closest Pixar has to a failure (the movie still did well at the box office, just not as well as other movies from the studio). 2012鈥檚 鈥淏rave鈥� got a mixed critical reception. 2013鈥檚 鈥淢onsters University鈥� did better at the box office, but was not a hit with critics, either.聽

As 鈥淐ars 2鈥� and 鈥淯niversity鈥� were released and Pixar announced 鈥淭he Incredibles 2鈥� and 鈥淐ars 3,鈥� it was a significant shift for the studio. Before 鈥淐ars 2,鈥� the 鈥淭oy Story鈥� films were the only story Pixar continued across multiple films. Since 鈥淢onsters University鈥� and 鈥淐ars 2鈥� were not critical hits, animated movie fans may have worried that Pixar鈥檚 creative standard was slipping.聽

The studio鈥檚 on top of the world following this summer鈥檚 original story 鈥淚nside Out,鈥� however. 鈥淚nside鈥� scored with critics and is in the top five of the highest-grossing movies this year so far. Pixar president Ed Catmull previously a plan to do 鈥渁n original movie a year鈥� and the studio will actually release two this year, with 鈥淭he Good Dinosaur鈥� due later this month. 鈥淒ory鈥� is the only movie set for 2016 right now, then 2017 will find the studio releasing 鈥淐ars 3鈥� and a film called 鈥淐oco."聽

鈥淚nside鈥� was certainly a good sign for fans fearing Pixar鈥檚 movies were in a creative slump and that the studio was focusing more on sequels. If the studio鈥檚 next original story, 鈥淒inosaur,鈥� scores as well, the studio will have shaken off a few lackluster stories.
