The film 鈥淪traight Outta Compton,鈥� which chronicles the formation of the influential rap group N.W.A., came in first at the box office for the third week running.聽

鈥淐ompton鈥� took in more than $13 million domestically to take first place again.聽

The new movie 鈥淲ar Room,鈥� which centers on a couple struggling with their marriage but who are helped through prayer, also did very respectably, coming in close behind 鈥淐ompton鈥� to take second place. 鈥淲ar Room鈥� grossed $11 million.聽

The new release 鈥淲e Are Your Friends,鈥� which stars Zac Efron as a member of the electronic dance music scene, did not succeed this weekend, grossing only a little less than $2 million. That didn鈥檛 allow the movie to even crack the top 10.

Behind 鈥淲ar鈥� was 鈥淢ission: Impossible 鈥� Rogue Nation,鈥� which came in third place with more than $8 million, and the new thriller 鈥淣o Escape,鈥� which also grossed more than $8 million. 鈥淪inister 2鈥� came in fifth with more than $4 million.

鈥淐ompton鈥� taking first place at the box office three weekends in a row echoes the success of 鈥淛urassic World,鈥� which did the same earlier this summer. Further back, 鈥淐aptain America: The Winter Soldier鈥� did the same in 2014, as did 2014鈥檚 鈥淭he Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies,鈥� which was the final chapter in the 鈥淗obbit鈥� trilogy. 鈥淭he Hunger Games: Mockingjay 鈥� Part 1鈥� also managed the feat the same year. All those movies are notably different from 鈥淐ompton,鈥� with all being action-oriented and, with the exception of 鈥淛urassic,鈥� based off a literary source, either a book or comic book. 鈥�(The 鈥淛urassic鈥� film series was initially based on the book by Michael Crichton.) The amount these movies grossed is, of course, different 鈥� for example, while "Compton" took in more than $13 million domestically this week, "Jurassic" took in more than $54 million in its third week on top of the box office.

Meanwhile, the success of 鈥淲ar鈥� echoes the respectable box office performance of previous movies by 鈥淲ar鈥� director Alex Kendrick. His films 鈥淐ourageous鈥� and 鈥淔ireproof,鈥� which were released in 2011 and 2008, respectively, also had 海角大神 themes and did well financially considering their budgets.聽

However, 鈥淲e Are Your Friends鈥� now ranks among some of the worst box office openings of all time. Critics weren鈥檛 enamored with the film and moviegoers may have just been unaware of the release of the EDM film or been uninterested.
