Rapper Kanye West will receive the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award at the upcoming MTV Video Music Awards.聽

West has released several albums which have garnered massive critical praise. His most recent was the 2013 album 鈥淵eezus,鈥� which was placed on many lists of the best albums of the year.聽

staff writer Nadeska Alexis wrote of the decision to give the award to West, 鈥淸West] has more than earned this honor, after years of releasing groundbreaking music and accompanying videos that have always pushed the envelope 鈥� his creative depths have never ceased to amaze us, and some could argue that his videos are complete masterpieces in their own right.鈥�

Recent recipients of the Video Vanguard Award include Beyonce, Britney Spears, and Justin Timberlake.

West released the album 鈥淭he College Dropout鈥� in 2004 and his other albums include 鈥淕raduation鈥� and 鈥淢y Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy.鈥� His hit singles include 鈥淕old Digger,鈥� 鈥淪tronger,鈥� and 鈥淟ove Lockdown.鈥澛�

recently placed West on their list of the 100 most influential people of 2015 and Elon Musk of Tesla and SpaceX noted in his write-up of West that the rapper has not been without controversy during his career. 鈥淜anye West would be the first person to tell you he belongs on this list,鈥� Musk wrote, and called him a 鈥減op juggernaut.鈥�

West鈥檚 work has been similarly acclaimed over his career, with calling his album 鈥�808s & Heartbreak鈥� one of the most groundbreaking albums of all time. 鈥淚ts core aesthetic was like nothing in hip-hop,鈥� RS wrote. 鈥淥ver time it served as a new template for up-and-comers in hip-hop and R&B.鈥澛�

Meanwhile, critics have been impressed by聽his most recent work. The A.V. Club's Evan Rytlewski wrote of聽鈥淵eezus,鈥� that the record is 鈥渓ean [and] immediate 鈥� visceral [and] unrelenting," while Helen Brown of the called it a 鈥渂rilliant nightmare 鈥� the most exciting album I鈥檝e heard in a long time.鈥�

The MTV VMAs will air on Aug. 30.
