Disney is going back to Pride Rock.聽
A TV film titled 鈥淭he Lion Guard: Return of the Roar,鈥 set in the world of the Disney movie "The Lion King," will reportedly in November. It will include the voices of James Earl Jones, who voiced protagonist Simba鈥檚 father Mufasa in 鈥淭he Lion King,鈥 and Ernie Sabella, who voiced Simba鈥檚 friend Pumbaa.聽
The film will center on Kion, a cub of Simba and his wife Nala. Rob Lowe of 鈥淧arks and Recreation鈥 will voice Simba this time around, while 鈥淏eing Mary Jane鈥 actress Gabrielle Union will provide the voice of Nala.
A TV series titled 鈥淭he Lion Guard鈥 will then follow on the Disney Junior channel sometime in 2016.
This move continues Disney鈥檚 strategy of stretching their stories across multiple entertainment platforms, one that Disney embraced early in the 鈥淟ion King鈥 franchise. The company released a direct-to-video 鈥淟ion King鈥 sequel, 鈥淭he Lion King 2: Simba鈥檚 Pride,鈥 and another DTV 鈥淟ion鈥 tale, 鈥淭he Lion King 1 陆,鈥 featuring Timon and Pumba, followed by a TV show titled 鈥淭imon & Pumbaa鈥 in the 1990s.聽
The strategy worked, and Disney has continued to follow it.
Disney is following its 1953 animated movie version of the J.M. Barrie story 鈥淧eter Pan鈥 with a TV program, titled 鈥淛ake and the Never Land Pirates,鈥 about a group of children who are pirates on Never Land and contend with 鈥淧an鈥 villain Captain Hook. 鈥淧an鈥 characters like Peter himself, Tinkerbell, and the Darling children have appeared on the program.聽
Similarly, Disney鈥檚 hit show 鈥淪ofia the First鈥 centers on a new character, Sofia, but features appearances by various famous Disney princesses like Belle of 鈥淏eauty and the Beast鈥 and Ariel of 鈥淭he Little Mermaid.鈥
The company is making this work for new movies as well 鈥 a TV series based on the 2002 movie 鈥淟ilo & Stitch鈥 aired for several years on the Disney Channel and a TV series based on the 2010 Disney movie 鈥淭angled鈥 will reportedly air on the Disney Channel starting in 2017.聽
