Toronto Film Festival: Which of these movies will become Oscar contenders?

Some of the films that will be screened at the Toronto Film Festival have been announced.聽
Movies that will appear at the Toronto Film Festival include Ridley Scott鈥檚 sci-fi movie 鈥淭he Martian鈥�; 鈥淭he Danish Girl,鈥� which is directed by Tom Hooper of 鈥淭he King鈥檚 Speech鈥� and stars Best Actor Oscar winner Eddie Redmayne; 鈥淏lack Mass,鈥� which stars Johnny Depp as criminal Whitey Bulger; 鈥淪tonewall,鈥� which is directed by action movie veteran Roland Emmerich; and 鈥淵outh,鈥� which stars Michael Caine and Harvey Keitel and is directed by Paolo Sorrentino.
The festival will also include screenings of the films 鈥淏easts of No Nation,鈥� which is directed by Cary Fukunaga of 鈥淭rue Detective鈥�; 鈥淔reeheld,鈥� which stars Julianne Moore and Steve Carell; 鈥淟egend,鈥� which stars actor Tom Hardy as criminal twin brothers; 鈥淪potlight,鈥� a movie based on the lives of the Boston Globe reporters who wrote about sexual abuse in the Catholic Church; and 鈥淭he Program,鈥� a biopic that stars Ben Foster as Lance Armstrong and is directed by Stephen Frears.
鈥淭he Martian鈥� will be an interesting movie to track the progress of this year. It鈥檚 a high-profile release at the Toronto Film Festival and is reminding many of 鈥淕ravity,鈥� the 2013 space tale that became both a massive box office hit and a leading Oscar contender, two achievements that don鈥檛 always go hand-in-hand. Another recent example of a movie that managed to be both (and win the Best Picture Oscar) was the 2012 film 鈥淎rgo.鈥� Like 鈥淕ravity,鈥� 鈥淭he Martian鈥� is being released in October, a traditionally quieter time for blockbusters, and could attract audiences looking for a sci-fi spectacle for the whole family.聽
The Toronto Film Festival will be held this September. Some of the movies that win the Grolsch People鈥檚 Choice Award, the festival鈥檚 top prize, have gone on to win Best Picture at the Oscars and most at the very least become top awards season contenders. Last year鈥檚 winner of the Grolsch People鈥檚 Choice Award was 鈥淭he Imitation Game,鈥� which was nominated for Best Picture, and the 2013 Toronto People鈥檚 Choice Award winner was 鈥�12 Years a Slave,鈥� the eventual Oscar Best Picture winner. The 2012 Toronto People鈥檚 Choice Award winner was Best Picture nominee 鈥淪ilver Linings Playbook,鈥� while the 2010 Toronto People鈥檚 Choice Award winner was 鈥淭he King鈥檚 Speech,鈥� which won the Best Picture Oscar. Toronto People鈥檚 Choice Awards winners 鈥淪lumdog Millionaire鈥� and 鈥淎merican Beauty鈥� also took the Best Picture Oscar.聽
