An animated TV series based on the Disney film 鈥淭angled鈥� is reportedly in the works.聽

According to , the TV show will air on the Disney Channel beginning in 2017 and actress Mandy Moore, who voiced Rapunzel, and Zachary Levi, who did the vocal work for the roguish Flynn Rider (also known as Eugene), will be returning for the show.

In addition, composing superstar Alan Menken, who did the music for such Disney classics as 鈥淏eauty and the Beast鈥� and 鈥淎laddin,鈥� and 鈥淭angled鈥� lyricist Glenn Slater will be coming back for the TV program as well.聽

According to , the TV show will take place after the events of 鈥淭angled,鈥� which (spoiler alert) found Rapunzel reunited with her parents and involved romantically with Flynn, and before the animated short 鈥淭angled Ever After,鈥� which came to theaters with the 3-D version of the Disney movie 鈥淏eauty and the Beast鈥� and centered on Rapunzel and Flynn's wedding day. In the new show, Rapunzel decides to wait to truly become a princess and look for adventure instead.

What would make Disney move forward with a TV show of 鈥淭angled鈥�? For one, the film is a perfect example of the studio's current movie model of an old-fashioned musical with showily modern sensibilities 鈥� the formula was embraced by Disney鈥檚 2013 megahit 鈥淔rozen,鈥� among others. Disney released the film version of 鈥淭angled鈥� following a string of misses such as 鈥淐hicken Little,鈥� 鈥淢eet the Robinsons,鈥� and 鈥淏olt.鈥� The 2009 movie 鈥淭he Princess and the Frog鈥� started down this path as well 鈥� the take-charge heroine, Tiana, wants to open her own restaurant 鈥� but the movie wasn鈥檛 a success at the box office.聽

So Disney called the Rapunzel story 鈥淭angled鈥� (no mention of a princess) and expanded on the modern wink-wink tone with classic musical numbers added. Some critics found the combination confusing, like critic Wesley Morris, who wrote that when one character 鈥渂reaks into song, the movie insists on sight gags or a jokey lyric鈥�. The musical bits sag with uncertainty. The whole movie does.鈥�

But others thought 鈥淭angled鈥� pulled off the mixture, with critic A.O. Scott comparing the film to "a familiar old neighborhood" and writing, 鈥淭he architecture 鈥� in particular that castle, its tower garlanded with clouds 鈥� is more or less as you remember it.... but the d茅cor is shinier, the pace a little faster, the overall atmosphere slick and efficient, with a few welcome grace notes of self-conscious classicism鈥�. its look and spirit convey a modified, updated but nonetheless sincere and unmistakable quality of old-fashioned Disneyness.鈥�

critic Tasha Robinson agreed, writing that "the script ... and the sprightly directing ... give the story plenty of snap and humor." Michael Phillips wrote that the movie is 鈥渂right and engaging 鈥� rollicking 鈥� 聽also enough of an action adventure to聽win聽over the princess mythology-resistant.鈥澛�

When "Frozen"'s Princess Anna exclaims, 鈥淭his is awkward鈥� and faces off with a big snow monster, it鈥檚 hard not to guess that 鈥淔rozen鈥� learned a thing or two from 鈥淭angled.鈥� Following the pop-culture-dominating success of 鈥淔rozen,鈥� perhaps executives want to further promote a series with some of the same modern sensibility.
