Eddie Redmayne: Here's who he's playing in the 'Harry Potter' world

Actor Redmayne has officially come aboard to star in the 'Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them' movie, playing a character who is an expert on magical creatures. The planned movie is only one of many that's expanding previously successful fictional universes.

We now know who will be starring in the "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them" movie.

鈥淭he Theory of Everything鈥� actor Eddie Redmayne has officially come aboard to portray the character of Newt Scamander, a character who first appeared in J.K. Rowling鈥檚 鈥淗arry Potter鈥� books. Rowling is writing the screenplay for 鈥淔antastic Beasts.鈥澛�

鈥淓ddie Redmayne has emerged as one of today鈥檚 most extraordinarily talented and acclaimed actors,鈥� Greg Silverman, president of creative development and worldwide production for Warner Bros., said in a . 鈥淲e are thrilled to welcome him into J.K. Rowling鈥檚 Wizarding World, where we know he will deliver a remarkable聽performance.鈥�

Director David Yates, who helmed the last several movies in the 鈥淗arry Potter鈥� series beginning with the fifth, 鈥淗arry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix,鈥� has come aboard to direct 鈥淔antastic Beasts.鈥�

Redmayne won a Best Actor Oscar last year for his portrayal of cosmologist Stephen Hawking in the movie 鈥淭heory of Everything.鈥� He also starred as one of the male leads in the 2012 big-screen musical 鈥淟es Miserables鈥� and co-starred with actress Emma Watson 鈥� known to 鈥淧otter鈥� fans as Hermione Granger 鈥� in the 2011 film 鈥淢y Week With Marilyn.鈥澛�

The 鈥淔antastic Beasts鈥� movies are yet another example of the spin-off trend in Hollywood. Sequels and reboots abound, but just as popular are films that take place in the same fictional universe as a previous, successful movie but center on a different character. The 鈥淔antastic Beasts鈥� movie is set decades before the 鈥淗arry Potter鈥� series and centers on a character peripheral to Harry, the Boy Who Lived.

Marvel Studios has proven that introducing new characters from previously established fictional universes can be a good bet. 2011鈥檚 鈥淐aptain America: The First Avenger,鈥� for example, took place many years before Marvel鈥檚 successful 鈥淚ron Man鈥� movie. And Disney is spinning off the 鈥淪tar Wars鈥� series into movies, according to the , with one titled 鈥淩ogue One,鈥� which fans hope will center on X-Wing pilots.聽
