Canceled TV shows: Here's what's not coming back this fall
We now know which TV shows will be reappearing next fall.
As usual, many of the programs were relatively new. NBC decided not to order any more of the comedies 鈥淎 to Z,鈥� 鈥淎bout a Boy,鈥� 鈥淢arry Me,鈥� 鈥淏ad Judge,鈥� and 鈥淥ne Big Happy.鈥� 鈥淶,鈥� 鈥淢arry,鈥� 鈥淏ad,鈥� and 鈥淗appy鈥� were all new shows this season, while 鈥淏oy鈥� aired its second season this year.
Over at ABC, the network canceled the comedies 鈥淐ristela,鈥� 鈥淢anhattan Love Story,鈥� and 鈥淪elfie鈥� (all were new shows this year) while Fox decided against more of the comedies 鈥淭he Mindy Project,鈥� 鈥淲eird Loners,鈥� and 鈥淢ulaney.鈥� 鈥�(Weird鈥� and 鈥淢ulaney were new this year.)聽
And according to the website , CBS didn鈥檛 order more of the comedies 鈥淭he McCarthys鈥� or 鈥淭he Millers.鈥� 鈥淢cCarthys鈥� was a new show this year.聽
Dramas that won鈥檛 be continuing next season include NBC鈥檚 鈥淎llegiance,鈥� 鈥淐onstantine,鈥� and 鈥淪tate of Affairs鈥� (all were new this year), as well as the Fox shows 鈥淏ackstrom,鈥� 鈥淭he Following,鈥� 鈥淕racepoint,鈥� and 鈥淩ed Band Society.鈥� (鈥淏ackstrom,鈥� 鈥淕racepoint,鈥� and 鈥淩ed鈥� were new.) ABC鈥檚 canceled dramas include 鈥淔orever,鈥� 鈥淩esurrection,鈥� and 鈥淩evenge鈥� (鈥淔orever鈥� was new), while CBS decided not to order more of the dramas 鈥淏attle Creek鈥� and 鈥淪talker.鈥� Both were new.
The only shows that debuted this year that were picked up by their networks were Fox鈥檚 鈥淓mpire,鈥� 鈥淕otham,鈥� and 鈥淟ast Man on Earth鈥� as well as ABC鈥檚 鈥淎merican Crime,鈥� 鈥淏lack-ish,鈥� 鈥淔resh Off the Boat,鈥� 鈥淕alavant,鈥� 鈥淗ow to Get Away with Murder,鈥� 鈥淎gent Carter,鈥� and 鈥淪ecrets and Lies.鈥� (Obviously, ABC renewed the most new shows by far.) NBC鈥檚 only new show to be renewed was 鈥淢ysteries of Laura,鈥� while CBS鈥檚 were 鈥淪corpion,鈥� 鈥淢adam Secretary,鈥� and 鈥淣CIS: New Orleans.鈥澛�
The only new show the CW canceled was 鈥淭he Messengers,鈥� while it went ahead with the new programs 鈥淭he Flash,鈥� 鈥淛ane the Virgin,鈥� and 鈥渋Zombie.鈥� 聽
NBC canceled the most new shows and picked up the fewest, while Fox also canceled more than they renewed. A question that has arisen more and more in recent years is if broadcast TV shows are being given enough time to grow an audience. An oft-cited example of a TV show that succeeded spectacularly after being renewed is the NBC sitcom 鈥淐heers,鈥� which was the last of all TV shows in the ratings early in its run, according to . It later turned into a top-rated show.
Some TV shows that debuted this past fall seemed destined early on to be canceled 鈥� NBC鈥檚 鈥淏ad Judge鈥� currently has a score of 38 out of 100 on the review aggregator website , with critic Robert Bianco, for one, writing that the show 鈥渞eeks of too many cooks.鈥� But according to critics, some improved during their first season. critic Ken Tucker wrote of ABC鈥檚 鈥淪elfie鈥�: 鈥淚 do wish 鈥楽elfie,鈥� which had a terrible title but an ever-improving ensemble, had been given another chance鈥� [a] mistake-cancellation,鈥� while writer Hillary Busis wrote that she 鈥渨as not a huge fan of ABC鈥檚聽Selfie聽when it聽premiered鈥� But over the past six weeks,聽Selfie聽has managed to transcend its initial premise鈥� to become something less gimmicky and more character-based鈥� this show [is] one of the fall鈥檚 strongest new comedies on a purely joke-by-joke level.鈥澛�
