For those who didn鈥檛 want to see one of the multiple romantic films being released this weekend, the action film 鈥淜ingsman: The Secret Service鈥 was another option for a night at the movies.
However, 鈥淜ingsman,鈥 which centers on a teenager (Taron Egerton) recruited for a secret spy organization by one of its members (Colin Firth), has received middling to negative reviews from critics so far.聽
Monitor film critic Peter Rainer gave the movie a B- and wrote that Samuel L. Jackson of 鈥淐aptain America: The Winter Soldier鈥 playing the villain is the highlight of the film.聽
鈥淐amping it up, Jackson is hilarious,鈥 Rainer wrote.聽
The film currently has a score of 58 out of 100 on the review aggregator site . Jordan Hoffman of the was one critic who found the film passable, awarding it four stars out of five.聽
鈥淲ildly enjoyable,鈥 Hoffman wrote. 鈥淭he spirit of 007 is all over this movie, but Vaughn鈥檚 script has a licence to poke fun鈥 the overall vibe is sheer glee鈥 The action scenes delight with shock humor.鈥澛
And critic Peter Debruge wrote of the movie, 鈥溾橩ingsman鈥 brings the irreverence back to the British spy genre鈥 gleefully pushing audiences鈥 favorite elements鈥 Few of the year鈥檚 films have been so openly covetous of material possessions, which sits oddly with the movie鈥檚聽open resentment of extreme wealth.鈥
However, critic Manohla Dargis wrote, 鈥淎s this bludgeoning movie grinds to a halt, its gears clogged by viscera and narrative overkill, even those who enjoy go-go gore may end up yearning for the soft touch and subtleties of Guy Ritchie鈥 The problem is that Mr. Vaughn has no interest in, or perhaps understanding of, violence as a cinematic tool鈥 his lack of modulation ruins 鈥楰ingsman鈥欌 That鈥檚 too bad, because someone here has assembled a fine cast.鈥
Michael Phillips of the also did not like the film's violence.聽
鈥淪illy, sadistic and finally a little galling,鈥 Phillips wrote of the movie. 鈥淭aron Egerton is engaging鈥 [but] If you don't like the way the action's handled in an action movie, you are in trouble鈥 I find the jocularity of Vaughn's gamer-style violence a drag. After an hour I wanted some visual clarity and something more than a few jokes about the tropes of the spy movie genre.鈥
