Hobbits and dwarves dominated the box office once again this past weekend, with the (presumably) final film in the 鈥淗obbit鈥 trilogy, 鈥The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies,鈥 winning the box office for the third straight week.
The third 鈥淗obbit鈥 movie, which was first released on Dec. 17, was battling with fellow box office stalwarts 鈥淚nto the Woods,鈥 the fairy tale musical adaptation that was released on Dec. 25, and 鈥淯nbroken,鈥 the adaptation of Laura Hillenbrand鈥檚 nonfiction book. "Unbroken" was directed by Angelina Jolie and also came out on Christmas Day.
According to the , 鈥淗obbit鈥 grossed more than $21 million this past weekend, while 鈥淲oods鈥 came in at second place with more than $19 million and 鈥淯nbroken鈥 grossed more than $18 million. Meanwhile, the horror sequel 鈥淭he Woman in Black 2鈥 took in more than $15 million.
However, 鈥淲oods鈥 has been the best-reviewed of the bunch. 鈥淎rmies鈥 has a score of 59 out of 100 on the review aggregator website , while 鈥淯nbroken鈥 has exactly the same score and 鈥淏lack鈥 only holds a score of 42. 鈥淲oods,鈥 by contrast, currently has a score of 70.
According to the website , 鈥淎rmies鈥 has taken in more than the second 鈥淗obbit鈥 film, 鈥淭he Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug,鈥 had in the same time period (19 days). 鈥淎rmies鈥 has grossed more than $220 million, while 鈥淪maug鈥 took in more than $201 million over that time.
Out of the three 鈥淗obbit鈥 films, 鈥淎rmies鈥 is currently in the middle of the pack in terms of critical reception. According to Metacritic, its 59 score is better than the first 鈥淗obbit鈥 film, 鈥淭he Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey,鈥 but not as good as the score held by 鈥淪maug.鈥
The film 鈥淭aken 3,鈥 an action movie starring Liam Neeson, opens this weekend, but the weekend is otherwise quiet, so 鈥淗obbit鈥 may hold onto its crown a little longer unless the newest "Taken" film proves to be a box office smash.
