'Into the Woods' trailer shows the bittersweet nature of fairy tales (and yes, there's singing)

A new trailer has arrived for the upcoming film adaptation of the Stephen Sondheim musical 鈥淚nto the Woods.鈥澛�
鈥淲oods鈥� centers on a baker (new 鈥淟ate Late Show鈥� host James Corden) and his wife (Emily Blunt of 鈥淓dge of Tomorrow鈥�) who set off on a quest to break the curse that leaves them childless, which was put on them by a witch (Meryl Streep). Along the way, they meet such fairy tale characters as Jack of the tale with the beanstalk (鈥�Les Miserables鈥� actor Daniel Huttlestone), Red Riding Hood (Lilla Crawford), Cinderella (鈥�Pitch Perfect鈥� actress Anna Kendrick), and Rapunzel (Mackenzie Mauzy of 鈥淔orever鈥�). While many characters get what they wished for, they soon find their actions have unexpected and tragic consequences.聽
鈥�Star Trek鈥� actor Chris Pine plays the prince that encounters Cinderella, while Johnny Depp portrays the wolf that meets Red Riding Hood, Tracey Ullman of 鈥淪tate of the Union鈥� plays Jack鈥檚 mother and 鈥�The Good Wife鈥� actress Christine Baranski plays Cinderella鈥檚 stepmother.
The film is directed by Rob Marshall, who is behind such previous movie musicals as 鈥�Chicago鈥� and 鈥淣ine.鈥�
Unlike the first trailer released, this clip includes the cast performing some of the score 鈥� the ensemble sings some of the title track and Streep sings a section of her song 鈥淪tay With Me.鈥澛�
In the trailer, the witch tells the baker and his wife that they must find 鈥渢he cow as white as a milk, the cape as red as blood, hair as yellow as corn, the slipper as pure as gold.鈥澛�
After their quests are concluded, the Baker鈥檚 Wife says, 鈥淎ll will come to a happy end.鈥�
The Witch isn鈥檛 so sure.聽
鈥淣ot always,鈥� she says.聽
Marshall spoke to about the story鈥檚 light beginnings and darker second act.
鈥淭here鈥檚 a lot of entertainment and a lot of fun to it, but it doesn鈥檛 shy away from any of those adult themes at all,鈥� he said.
鈥淲oods鈥� hits theaters on Dec. 25.
