A trailer for 鈥淐happie,鈥 the next film by director Neill Blomkamp, has been released.
Blomkamp directed the 2013 movie 鈥Elysium鈥 and the 2009 film 鈥District 9,鈥 among other work.聽
In 鈥淐happie,鈥 鈥淭he Newsroom鈥 actor Dev Patel鈥檚 character Deon has created the robot Chappie, 鈥渁 machine that can think and feel.鈥 He and his compatriots watch, delighted, as Chappie learns words and creates drawings. (He also enjoys opening cartons of milk and petting dogs.) 鈥淎nything you want to do in your life, you can do,鈥 Patel鈥檚 character tells Chappie.
However, Hugh Jackman鈥檚 character, Vincent, isn鈥檛 sure Chappie鈥檚 a good idea. 鈥淭he problem with artificial intelligence is it鈥檚 way too unpredictable,鈥 he says, and calls for him to be 鈥渞emoved.鈥
Fragments of action scenes show that Chappie鈥檚 existence may not be an entirely peaceful one. However, he says, 鈥淚 am consciousness. I am alive.鈥澛
鈥淒istrict 9鈥 and 鈥淓lysium鈥 star Sharlto Copley plays Chappie through motion capture, and the movie also co-stars Sigourney Weaver.
The film is set to be released on March 6.聽
Blomkamp told the website that 鈥淐happie鈥 is 鈥渟cience fiction. It鈥檚 totally different to [鈥楧istrict 9鈥 and 鈥楨lysium,鈥橾 but it has funny elements to it.鈥
Jackman called the script for the movie 鈥渧ery, very, very good鈥 very interesting鈥 in an interview with .
鈥淚t鈥檚 going to surprise people in a lot of ways,鈥 he said of the film. 鈥淸Blomkamp] is a real visionary.鈥澛
Blomkamp鈥檚 film 鈥淒istrict 9鈥 was nominated for the 2010 Best Picture award, and Monitor film critic Peter Rainer gave the film a B+, calling it 鈥渉ighly creative and amusing鈥 in patches.鈥 He was less won over by 鈥Elysium,鈥 which Rainer gave a C+.
鈥淭he garbage-y set pieces on Earth have a fetid monumentality, and [protagonist] Max [played by Matt Damon]鈥檚 desperation is sometimes stirring,鈥 Rainer wrote. 鈥淏ut Blomkamp overdoes even his best effects.鈥
