鈥淏ridesmaids鈥� director Paul Feig says he鈥檚 in for a new 鈥淕hostbusters鈥� movie and that the film will have a female cast.

There had been rumors that Feig could take the helm for the movie and that it might involve a cast of women, and the director himself confirmed it on Twitter.

Feig directed the 2011 movie 鈥淏ridesmaids,鈥� which starred Kristen Wiig, Maya Rudolph, and Melissa McCarthy, and the 2013 film 鈥淭he Heat,鈥� which starred McCarthy and Sandra Bullock. He also created the short-lived but acclaimed NBC sitcom 鈥淔reaks and Geeks鈥� and has directed episodes of such TV shows as 鈥淣urse Jackie,鈥� 鈥淎rrested Development,鈥� and 鈥淭he Office.鈥� Dippold was behind the script for 鈥淭he Heat鈥� and also wrote for the NBC sitcom 鈥淧arks and Recreation.鈥澛�

The first 鈥淕hostbusters鈥� film, which starred Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis, and Ernie Hudson, was released in 1984 and is considered a comedy classic. 鈥淕hostbusters II,鈥� which reunited the original cast, was released in 1989.

A third movie had been rumored for years and 鈥淕hostbusters鈥� and 鈥淕hostbusters II鈥� director Ivan Reitman was 鈥渢he most stable part of the equation, long locked to direct his third installment,鈥� reporter Mike Fleming Jr. writes. But Reitman decided to bow out after the death of Ramis earlier this year. 鈥淲hen I came back from Harold鈥檚 funeral, it was really moving and it made me think about a lot of things,鈥� Reitman told Deadline. 鈥淚鈥檇 just finished directing聽[the movie released this April] 鈥楧raft Day,鈥� which I鈥檓 really happy with and proud of. Working on a film that is smaller and more dramatic was so much fun and satisfying鈥� I said I鈥檇 been thinking about it for weeks, that I鈥檇 rather just produce this聽Ghostbusters. I told them I thought I could help, but let鈥檚 find a really good director and make it with him.鈥�

Now Feig told that the new movie will take place in an all-new 鈥淕hostbusters鈥� world.聽

鈥淢y favorite thing to do is work with funny women,鈥� he said. 鈥淚 was like, what if it was an all female cast? If they were all women? 聽Suddenly,聽my mind kind of exploded: that would be really fun. And then I thought, well, what if we just make it new? It鈥檚 not coming into the world that existed before. It鈥檚 always hard if the world has gone through this big ghost attack, how do you do it again?... I love origin stories. That鈥檚 my favorite thing. I love聽the first one so much I don鈥檛 want to do anything to ruin the memory of that. So it just felt like, let鈥檚 just restart it because then we can have new dynamics. I want the technology to be even cooler. I want it to be really scary, and I want it to happen in our world today that hasn鈥檛 gone through it so it鈥檚 like, oh my God, what鈥檚 going on?鈥澛�

If any original 鈥淕hostbusters鈥� cast members wanted to return, Feig said he鈥檇 be on board.

鈥淚 mean, look, those are my comedy heroes,鈥� Feig said. 鈥淪o as far as I鈥檓 concerned, anybody wants to come back I welcome with open arms. It would just be in different roles now, but it would be fun to figure out how to do that.鈥�

Murray had some ideas about casting 鈥� when asked about the possibility of a female 鈥淕hostbusters鈥� movie last month, he threw out names.聽

鈥淢elissa would be a spectacular Ghostbuster,鈥� Murray told the , naming his 鈥淪t. Vincent鈥� co-star McCarthy. 鈥淎nd Kristen Wiig is so funny 鈥� God, she鈥檚 funny! I like this girl Linda Cardellini a lot. And Emma Stone is funny. There are some funny girls out there.鈥�

When asked about Murray鈥檚 list, Feig called it 鈥渁wesome.鈥�

鈥淔or me there鈥檚 so many ways I can go with this because there are so many funny women, that鈥檚 going to be the hardest thing to narrow down is who to put in,鈥� he told EW. 鈥淚鈥檝e got a lot of ideas on that but nobody set in stone.鈥�
