Nicole Kidman, Colin Firth, and Mark Strong star in the upcoming film 鈥淏efore I Go to Sleep,鈥 which is based on the bestselling novel of the same name by S.J. Watson.
Watson鈥檚 book was first released in 2011 and follows a woman named Christine Lucas (Kidman) who is told she suffered an accident that causes her to wake up every morning with no knowledge of who she is or what happened to her and that her amnesia results from a violent attack. She begins to keep a video diary and struggles to discover who attacked her and who around her, including her husband (Firth) and doctor (Strong), is telling the truth.聽
Watson鈥檚 novel received mostly positive reviews, with reviewer Janet Maslin writing that the book has 鈥渢he summer鈥檚 single most suspenseful plot,鈥 though she added that 鈥渟tories as high-concept as this tend to begin more excitingly than they end.鈥 Meanwhile, critic John O鈥機onnell found the novel to be 鈥渆xceptionally accomplished鈥 a brilliant example of how an unpromisingly high-concept idea can be transformed by skillful execution鈥 The structure is so dazzling it almost distracts you from the quality of the writing.鈥 writer Jonathan Shapiro was also won over, writing that the book 鈥渋s a brilliant, nasty noir鈥 and that it 鈥渆ntertains while touching on complex questions of the meaning of identity and memory鈥 One can't help but be impressed by Watson's skill.鈥澛
The film is the second recent team-up of Firth and Kidman 鈥 the two starred in the movie 鈥淭he Railway Man,鈥 which was released this past May. Strong has recently appeared in such movies as the 2012 film 鈥淶ero Dark Thirty鈥 and the 2011 movie 鈥淭inker Tailor Soldier Spy.鈥
鈥淪leep鈥 is scheduled to be released on Sept. 12 in the U.S.
