Ella Fitzgerald: An actress as well as a legendary singer

Ella Fitzgerald isn鈥檛 known as the First Lady of Jazz for nothing 鈥 she鈥檚 chiefly remembered today for her remarkable singing career, which spanned more than 50 years and won her 13 Grammy Awards.
But she also made her way to Hollywood, starring in a few movies that included 鈥Pete Kelly鈥檚 Blues,鈥 which came out in 1955, and 鈥St. Louis Blues,鈥 which was released in 1958.
鈥淜elly鈥 centered on the protagonist of the same name who worked as a musician but often had run-ins with various residents of the criminal world. Actor Jack Webb of 鈥淒ragnet鈥 starred as Pete Kelly, while 鈥淧sycho鈥 star Janet Leigh played Pat鈥檚 love interest Ivy.
Fitzgerald portrayed singer Maggie Jackson in the movie and performed two numbers, including 鈥淗ard-Hearted Hannah.鈥
Sharp-eyed viewers could also spot future star Jayne Mansfield in the film in a brief role, for which she was billed only as 鈥淐igarette Girl.鈥
Before 鈥淧ete,鈥 Fitzgerald had also appeared in a minor role in the Abbott and Costello movie 鈥淩ide 鈥楨m Cowboy.鈥 In the film, the singer portrayed Ruby, a ranch worker who performed the song 鈥淎-Tisket, A-Tasket.鈥 After 鈥淜elly,鈥 Fitzgerald appeared in the biopic of blues musician W.C. Handey 鈥淪t. Louis Blues,鈥 in which she was credited only as 鈥淪inger.鈥 Performers Nate King Cole, Eartha Kitt, and Cab Calloway also starred.
Fitzgerald鈥檚 final full-length film was 1960鈥檚 鈥淟et No Man Write My Epitaph,鈥 which also starred Burl Ives, Shelley Winters, and Ricardo Montalban. The singer portrayed a blues singer addicted to drugs who was living in a Chicago apartment building.
While she herself didn鈥檛 appear in the movies, her songs are listed on the soundtracks of more than 100 films. Some of her tracks鈥 most memorable appearances include the 1989 film 鈥Driving Miss Daisy,鈥 in which her song 鈥(I Love You) For Sentimental Reasons鈥 was used; 1996鈥檚 鈥The English Patient,鈥 which used her song 鈥淐heek to Cheek;鈥 and the 2012 film 鈥淭he Master,鈥 which featured her song 鈥淕et Thee Behind Me Satan.鈥 聽
