Jane Levy stars on 'Suburgatory.'

Rolling right through its rocking second season, SUBURGATORY is deftly and comedically handling the issues of birth parents, adoptive parents and the confusion teenagers feel in the midst of such big life issues.聽 When Tessa Altman moved to the suburbs with her dad George, little did they suspect that life would be so colorful, rich and heartily adventuresome as it is in SUBURGATORY.聽 In a recent press interview, star Jane Levy candidly talked about her role and her secret celebrity crushes that she would love to have on the show.
听听
So what traits that are most like you that you share with Tessa?
JANE:聽 Most like me, my character and I, I guess聽I don鈥檛 know.聽 It鈥檚 a hard question.聽 It鈥檚 like they become 鈥 you know, especially for TV 鈥 you play this character for so long that things just start to bleed and you don鈥檛 know anymore.聽
听听
Can you talk a bit about your character?聽 What鈥檚 going on with Tessa in this new season?
JANE:聽 Sure.聽 Yeah, Tessa is a Chatswinian now.聽 She鈥檚 no longer trying to get out.聽 She has embraced this as her new home.聽 And I think the biggest thing that goes with Tessa, especially at the beginning of season two, is she has this new interest in her mother in a way that she never did before.聽 She spent the summer in New聽York City, and she found some of her things and she鈥檚 just starting to wonder who is this person.聽 It was just huge.聽 And she meets her mom this season, and that was really a pleasure to discover, that relationship with Malin Akerman, who鈥檚 a really great actress.聽

What鈥檚 Tessa鈥檚 relationship like with her mom?
JANE:聽 Well, I think the story is still sort of open in a way that we haven鈥檛 finished shooting the season.聽 I don鈥檛 even know what鈥檚 coming up next.聽 But there鈥檚 been two main episodes where Tessa reunites with her mother.聽 And it鈥檚 sort of heartbreaking in a way.聽 It鈥檚 hard to explain.聽 It鈥檚 like a huge moment, meeting a parent that you never met before, and it doesn鈥檛 mean that everything鈥檚 falling apart or everything鈥檚 coming together.聽 It鈥檚 almost so big that Tessa doesn鈥檛 even know how to comprehend it yet.聽 But what鈥檚 interesting about the way that it鈥檚 written is her mom turns out to be this person, from the audience perspective, that you like, but you understand that she鈥檚 not necessarily the best person.聽 You like her, but you want to hate her.聽 And there鈥檚 something tragic in the way where she seems like a really cool older sister but someone who had a kid and just decided to leave it but now wants to be like a groovy mom in a way.聽 And what鈥檚 great about it is Tessa is so mature that she鈥檚 able to see that and it hurts a little bit, but she realizes that this isn鈥檛 like her dad who鈥檚 been with her whole life; this is somebody who left her, but she doesn鈥檛 resent her. I guess it brings her and George closer together.聽 But I don鈥檛 really know where it鈥檚 going to go from here.聽 We鈥檝e left off Christmas episode that aired last week where Tessa says, 鈥淭hanks for having me, but I鈥檓 going to go back to my dad.鈥
听听
What about fashion trends?聽 Is there like a particular look that maybe your character has that you also have adopted?
JANE:聽 Not so much.聽 Tessa kind of dresses like a weirdo.聽 I mean, that鈥檚 what鈥檚 great about her.聽 She鈥檚 her own person and she has her own style and she doesn鈥檛 feel the need to dress like anyone else. But I鈥檓 so much more comfortable in mine than Dalia who has to wear crazy 6-inch heels.聽 Is there such a thing as 6-inch heels?
听听
If you could pick a love interest for Tessa, who would you choose?
JANE:聽 Well, because they have to be young, obviously.聽 But if you ask me, my celebrity crushes, it鈥檚 like, grossly, older men. I guess that would be fun. They鈥檙e so weird. I鈥檓, like, embarrassed to admit them.聽 Okay.聽 So one of the only TV shows that I really love is TWIN PEAKS. Kyle McLachlan plays Agent Dale Cooper, and I love Dale Cooper, so I鈥檓 in love with Kyle McLachlan.聽 He could be my dad, so it鈥檚 really weird.聽 But I don鈥檛 know. My other celebrity crushes are just... they鈥檙e just bizarre.聽 And one, Michael Shannon, because he鈥檚 just, like, so tall and powerful.聽 Who else?聽 Viggo Mortensen.聽 I mean, they鈥檙e old enough to be my dad.聽 It鈥檚 weird.听听
听听
Have you met any of them?
JANE:聽 Yeah, I met Kyle McLachlan.聽 And I couldn鈥檛 put words together.聽
听听
Can you just talk about that you made a horror film, 鈥Evil Dead鈥?聽 Can you talk a little about your experience?聽 Are you a horror fan?聽 Did you watch the first movies?聽
JANE:聽 I鈥檓 not necessarily a horror fan.聽 I just never really watched them that much.聽 I thought the script was really well written, and it was so different than what I鈥檝e been doing on SUBURGATORY for six months that I thought it would be an awesome learning experience and a stretch for me as an actor.聽 And it was a really tough shoot.聽 My character gets tortured a whole bunch, so that鈥檚 how I was feeling.聽 But I鈥檓 going to see it next week, and I hope it鈥檚 good. It was filmed in New Zealand and it鈥檚 a very violent film.
听听
More and more people are watching seasons of TV one home video/DVD.聽 Have you ever done that with a show and do you understand that appeal?
JANE:聽 Yeah, I love it.聽 I know plenty people and I鈥檝e done it myself where you lock yourself inside for four days and you a watch a whole series.聽 It鈥檚 like watching a never-ending movie.聽 It鈥檚 great not to have to wait for the next season or the next week. I just love SEX AND THE CITY so I can watch SEX AND THE CITY until the cows come home.
听听
You were named on Forbes list of 30 stars under 30 reinventing the world.聽 Is that crazy to you?聽 How does that feel?
JANE:聽 Yeah.聽 I don鈥檛 know.聽 It鈥檚 crazy.聽 I don鈥檛 know.聽 Flattering.
听听
What can you share about SUBURGATORY鈥檚 homage to HOMELAND?
JANE: Emily, our creator, is pretty in love with it.聽 So she鈥檚 not making fun of it. I don鈥檛 know if you saw an episode this season early on where at the end of the episode, Dalia goes to the garage and opens the Torah praying. I don鈥檛 know what that has to do with HOMELAND, but there鈥檚 going to be a couple of those things this season, if you鈥檙e a fan of both.
