How do you identify most with ARIA, and what were the biggest differences?
LUCY HALE: She鈥檚 really sensitive and she鈥檚 really about the relationships with people.听 She鈥檚 close with her family.听 She鈥檚 close with her boyfriend and her friends.听 And, you know, that鈥檚 where the heart of Aria really comes from, because I鈥檓 the same way.听 But she鈥檚 more of a... I feel I鈥檓 a little bit... I鈥檓 older in real life than Aria, so I guess the struggle with the character was just trying to keep her young and a little naive to life.听 Because I feel like Lucy is 23.听 I started the show when I was 20.听 I was just sort of keeping that bright-eyed, excited-about-the-world kind of thing.听 And obviously, I couldn鈥檛 relate to the situations that they鈥檙e going through.听 I鈥檝e never had a friend pass away and I鈥檝e never had someone try to ruin my life and reveal all my secrets.听 So, yeah, I guess that鈥檚 how I struggled.
What were you like at Aria鈥檚 age?听
LUCY HALE:听 Oh, man, 16 and 17?听 I just moved out to California, and so I guess, in that sense, I was very naive about L.A. and about Hollywood and about auditions.听 And I think it鈥檚 a good thing.听 Because if I were to have moved out now, I would have been like, this will never happen; I鈥檓 just going to go back home and go to school.听 But I was just very excited about trying new things.听 And coming from a smaller town and to one of the craziest cities in the world, I was just very excited about new experiences, I guess.

听Who鈥檚 changed the most during the course of those three years?听 Do you think it鈥檚 you or Aria?听
听LUCY HALE: That鈥檚 one I鈥檝e never gotten.听 I think for me personally, I鈥檝e just gotten busier.听 It鈥檚 just been like scheduling kind of.听 I鈥檝e gotten to meet a lot of great people, do a lot of interesting things. 听But I think internally, Aria has had to grow up so fast, you know.听 They鈥檝e gone through so many things, and I think she鈥檚 gotten really tough and she鈥檚 gotten really strong.听 So I鈥檇 have to say for me I still feel like the same person.听 I think Aria鈥檚 just changed as a person in general, if that answers your question, yeah.

听What you think of the way people watch TV when it comes to home video and if you do that with shows as well?
听LUCY HALE:听 Absolutely.听 You know, for me I鈥檝e caught on to shows that, you know, are done we鈥檙e done a few years ago, but it was something I wanted to watch.听 And I think that, you know, with DVDs and even with watching online, I feel like a lot of people watch our show on Hulu and on YouTube, and a lot of people internationally.听 It鈥檚 incredible.听 It鈥檚 just I want our show to live forever, whether we鈥檙e shooting for a long time or whether it鈥檚 through media.
听听
听Do you get watch the special features or any of that stuff?
听LUCY HALE:听 Oh, I love a good blooper reel, because I love to see... because our show is so intense all the time.听 And it鈥檚 really not when we鈥檙e shooting, because we鈥檙e goofing off and we鈥檒l have to do something over and over again because we鈥檙e cracking up about something that happened before we started shooting.听 And so I love that kind stuff, because at the end of the day, you realize it鈥檚 real people and this is their job.听 So I guess that鈥檚 why I like it.
听听
听Are there shows you鈥檝e discovered watching them that way?
LUCY HALE:听 Well, I started watching BREAKING BAD late into the game.听 So I still have a little bit to catch up on.听 But the other day I started watching 'Saved by the Bell' again, because I used to watch it growing up.听 I don鈥檛 know.听 I guess it was a comforting thing.听 So I went through Netflix and I got a box set.
听听
听On a show like yours, it could have been a nightmare if you guys hadn鈥檛 got along.
LUCY HALE:听 I鈥檓 telling you, when I read the script, and I was like 鈥淭his is going to be great.鈥澨 I was like, 鈥淏ut four girls?听 This is going to be a nightmare.鈥澨 But I鈥檓 telling you, it is the perfect experience.听 We鈥檙e not all necessarily best friends off set, but we all respect each other.听 We all get along.听 And it鈥檚 sort of we go there, everyone鈥檚 professional, everyone鈥檚 ready to work and excited about it.听 听But, yeah, we did.听 We spent our first Thanksgiving together.听 So it鈥檚 been three years this past Thanksgiving that we鈥檝e done the show.听 And it鈥檚 just great, you know.听 I love the people I work with, and I couldn鈥檛听?? we鈥檙e very, very lucky. I think that the reason we all get along is because we all look very different.听 I think we鈥檙e all going to have very different careers.听 And I think we鈥檝e realized what we have to offer.听 But Ashley is definitely the girl that I鈥檒l talk about clothes with or about guys or something, so she鈥檚 like my little gossip friend. Shay is into philanthropy work.听 She鈥檚 really big into charity.听 But she鈥檚 also good at home decor, so she鈥檚 always on Pinterest, and so we鈥檒l talk about that.听 And then Troian is just brilliant.听 She鈥檚 very intelligent.听 She鈥檚 the friend that I鈥檒l go to, to talk to about deeper stuff, I guess.听 So it鈥檚 fun to have a lot of different types of friends.听 It鈥檚 a good group of people.
听听
听Do you test your music out on all of them?
听LUCY HALE:听 Not yet, because we start recording next week.听 But I鈥檒l get little texts, and they鈥檙e all very excited about it.听 So it鈥檚 nice to have their support.
听听
听How did that come about for you, and what are you hoping to achieve?
听LUCY HALE:听 The music?听 Well, I actually started out in music.听 I grew up performing and singing.听 And acting, the idea of it just sort of fell into my lap.听 And I was a little hesitant at first, but I was like, okay, I鈥檒l try it.听 And so I did and I got some luck in it, which is cool.听 That鈥檚 why I鈥檓 here.听 But I鈥檓 going back to why I got into it in the first place.听 And I think that, you know, just me talking about it that鈥檚 my passion.听 That鈥檚 what I want to do.听 I know I have a lot to prove just because it鈥檚 like here鈥檚 an actress who鈥檚 making an album.听 We鈥檝e heard that story a million times before.听 But I think that once you hear the music, you hear how genuine it is, because I am writing it.听 And it鈥檚 been a fun experience.听 It鈥檚 been a year, and I鈥檓 just so excited. I鈥檓 doing country. I think people that know me and knew me before the show knew that I started in music.听 And being from Tennessee definitely helps.听 But it鈥檚 been great.听 I鈥檓 really excited for people to hear it.
