The musical 鈥淥nce,鈥� based on the 2006 Oscar-winning movie, led both musicals and plays with the most overall Tony nominations on Tuesday morning.

The nominations were announced by 鈥淏ig Bang Theory鈥� star Jim Parsons, who will headline a Broadway production of 鈥淗arvey鈥� in June, and 鈥淕CB鈥� actress Kristin Chenoweth, who rose to Broadway fame when she originated the role of Galinda in the musical 鈥淲icked鈥� and most recently starred in another musical, 鈥淧romises, Promises.鈥�

鈥淭he Gershwins' Porgy and Bess,鈥� a revival of the classic musical that also drew controversy for changing some aspects of the show,聽received聽10 nominations, second only to "Once," which聽received聽11. The Peter Pan origin story 鈥淧eter and the Starcatcher,鈥� based on the children鈥檚 book by Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson, earned the most nominations for a play, with 9.

Four shows are each nominated for the biggest awards for the Tonys, Best Play and Best Musical. In addition to 鈥淧eter,鈥� the plays 鈥淐lybourne Park,鈥� 鈥淥ther Desert Cities,鈥� and 鈥淰enus in Fur鈥� received nods for Best Play, while 鈥淟eap of Faith,鈥� 鈥淣ice Work If You Can Get It,鈥� 鈥淣ewsies,鈥� and 鈥淥nce鈥� made the cut for Best Musical.

The two nominations for the famously troubled musical 鈥�Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark,鈥� for costume design and set design, were viewed as a disappointing awards haul by some. 鈥淪pider-Man鈥� didn鈥檛 garner a nomination for Best Musical or one for its original score.

The Tonys separately recognize plays and musicals that were produced as revivals, and four of each made the cut this year. Best Revival of a Play nominees are 鈥�Arthur Miller鈥檚 Death of a Salesman,鈥� 鈥淢aster Class,鈥� 鈥�Wit,鈥� and 鈥�Gore Vidal鈥檚 The Best Man,鈥� while 鈥淭he Gershwins鈥� Porgy and Bess,鈥� 鈥�Jesus Christ Superstar,鈥� 鈥淔ollies,鈥� and 鈥�Evita鈥� earned nods for Best Revival of a Musical.

Those nominated for their acting work in a play include actor James Corden for 聽鈥淥ne Man, Two Guvnors鈥� as well as James Earl Jones for 鈥淕ore Vidal鈥檚 The Best Man,鈥� John Lithgow for 鈥淭he Columnist,鈥� Frank Langella for 鈥淢an and Boy,鈥� and Philip Seymour Hoffman for 鈥淎rthur Miller鈥檚 Death of a Salesman.鈥�

Actress Linda Lavin earned the only nod for the play 鈥淭he Lyons鈥� through her nomination for Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role in a Play, along with Cynthia Nixon for 鈥淲it,鈥� Nina Arianda for 鈥淰enus in Fur,鈥� Stockard Channing for 鈥淥ther Desert Cities,鈥� and Tracie Bennett for 鈥淓nd of the Rainbow.鈥�

For the Tony Awards, the categories of best 鈥渇eatured鈥� actors and actresses are roughly the equivalent of the Oscars鈥� best supporting actor and actress categories. For plays, 鈥�Spider-Man鈥� star Andrew Garfield earned a nod for his work in 鈥淎rthur Miller鈥檚 Death of a Salesman,鈥� joining fellow nominees Michael Cumpsty for 鈥淓nd of the Rainbow,鈥� 海角大神 Borle for 鈥淧eter and the Starcatcher,鈥� Jeremy Shamos for 鈥淐lybourne Park,鈥� and Tom Edden for 鈥淥ne Man, Two Guvnors.鈥�

鈥淒eath of a Salesman鈥� earned another nod with actress Linda Emond鈥檚 nomination for Best Performance by an Actress in a Featured Role in a Play. Also nominated were Judith Light for 鈥淥ther Desert Cities,鈥� Celia Keenan-Bolger for 鈥淧eter and the Starcatcher,鈥� Condola Rashad for 鈥淪tick Fly,鈥� and Spencer Kayden for 鈥淒on鈥檛 Dress for Dinner.鈥�

For musicals, acting nominees for Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Musical were Jeremy Jordan for 鈥淣ewsies,鈥� Danny Burstein for 鈥淔ollies,鈥� Norm Lewis for 鈥淭he Gershwins鈥� Porgy and Bess,鈥� Ron Raines for 鈥淔ollies鈥� and Steve Kazee for 鈥淥nce.鈥� Actresses who earned a nod for their leading performance in a musical were Cristin Milioti for 鈥淥nce,鈥� Kelli O鈥橦ara for 鈥淣ice Work If You Can Get It,鈥� Laura Osnes for 鈥淏onnie & Clyde,鈥� Audra McDonald for 鈥淭he Gershwins鈥� Porgy and Bess,鈥� and Jan Maxwell for 鈥淔ollies.鈥�

The actors in a musical who were nominated in the featured category were Michael Cerveris for 鈥淓vita,鈥� David Alan Grier for 鈥淭he Gershwins鈥� Porgy and Bess,鈥� Michael McGrath in 鈥淣ice Work If You Can Get It,鈥� Josh Young in 鈥淛esus Christ Superstar,鈥� and Phillip Boykin for his show 鈥淭he Gershwins鈥� Porgy and Bess.鈥� Actresses who received a featured nod for a musical were Jayne Houdyshell for 鈥淔ollies,鈥� Judy Kaye for 鈥淣ice Work If You Can Get It,鈥� Jessie Mueller for 鈥淥n A Clear Day You Can See Forever,鈥� Da鈥橵ine Joy Randolph in 鈥淕host: The Musical,鈥� and Elizabeth A. Davis for 鈥淥nce.鈥�

Four musicals were nominated for the category of Best Book of a Musical, which recognizes the portions of a musical that are not sung. 鈥淣ice Work If You Can Get It,鈥� 鈥�Lysistrata Jones,鈥� 鈥淣ewsies,鈥� and 鈥淥nce鈥� received nods this year.

The shows honored in the Best Original Score (Music And/Or Lyrics) category were two plays which included music and two musicals 鈥� 鈥淏onnie & Clyde,鈥� 鈥淧eter and the Starcatcher,鈥� 鈥淥ne Man, Two Guvnors,鈥� and 鈥淣ewsies鈥� took the four slots.
