Ouya Kickstarter drive nets $8.5 million. What's next?
Android 4.0-based gaming console company Ouya has raised $8.5 million on Kickstarter 鈥� approximately nine times the original goal of $950,000.聽
In a message to supporters, the Ouya team confirmed the end of the Kickstarter campaign, and promised to begin shipping completed devices by sometime in March.聽
"We are truly excited and blown away by the support: it's amazing how well an open, affordable, accessible games console has resonated with gamers and developers,"聽Ouya chief Julie Uhrman聽 the Guardian earlier this week.聽
So what is Ouya, exactly? Well, think of it like an open-source Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3, but with the specs of a powerful smartphone not a powerful PC. The console, which will cost a hundred bucks, is designed to be hooked up to the TV; action is managed via a sleek, touch-screen enabled controller. But unlike the Xbox 360 and PS3, which are "closed" systems, any developer can create a game for the Ouya 鈥� in fact, the Guardian has , the whole thing will be completely hackable.聽
"Let鈥檚 open this sucker up!" copy on the Ouya Kickstart page. "It's time we brought back innovation, experimentation, and creativity to the big screen. Let鈥檚 make the games less expensive to make, and less expensive to buy. With all our technological advancements, shouldn't costs be going down? Gaming could be cheaper!聽We're handing the reins over to the developer with only one condition: at least some gameplay has to be free."聽
So far, so good. And $8.5 million is a lot of cash. Of course, Ouya still has a long uphill battle if it wants to make a dent in the console market. After all, for the average user, open-source ethos will be less important than an intuitive interface and a killer selection of big-budget titles. Ouya, for its part, has said that it will 飞颈迟丑听Namco Bandai 补苍诲听Square Enix 鈥� the Japanese version of Final Fantasy III is expected to be available at launch.聽
