HTC is prepping a new flagship phone called the HTC One.聽

That's the word today from tech site HTC Source, which reports that the device will launch on March 8 in Europe 鈥� under the Nokia-ish moniker M7 鈥� and in the US on March 22. Stateside, the HTC One will be sold by Verizon Wireless, AT&T, and Sprint; $200 and a two-year contract will get you the 32GB model and $300 and the same contract will buy you 64GB.聽

"Our source has also confirmed that the聽HTC One will have metal casing聽with front-facing stereo speakers,"聽聽Nick Gray of HTC Source.聽"The device will be available in both black and silver/white. Previous images of the聽HTC One with a black soft-touch casing聽were real, but our source claims they were pre-production units which were used during various phases of testing."

Standard caveats apply: Gray hasn't identified his source, besides saying the person is "trusted," and HTC hasn't commented one way or another on the rumors. But the timing certainly lines up. The last HTC flagship device, the HTC One X, was unveiled in February of 2012, and officially launched a few months later. One year ago, in other words, which means the HTC smartphone line is due for a shake-up.聽

The One X was generally liked by critics, who praised the speed, power, and feel of the phone.聽

"[T]he HTC One X is a beautiful piece of kit," one reviewer. "It's stylishly designed, light, has a cracking screen and comes with enough future-proofing to make us believe our grandchildren may still have one...聽In short: the rivals better step it up in 2012 if they want to stop the HTC sparking a big revival for the popular smartphone brand."

But that big revival never came. last summer indicated that the One X was "underperforming," and that HTC's overall sales, in the months after the One X was released, were slipping. to Bloomberg, HTC recently dropped off the leader board of the top five global smartphone brands 鈥� a list currently by Samsung and Apple.聽
