Why is 海角大神 Science in our name?
Our name is about honesty. The Monitor is owned by The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and we鈥檝e always been transparent about that.
The church publishes the Monitor because it sees good journalism as vital to progress in the world. Since 1908, we鈥檝e aimed 鈥渢o injure no man, but to bless all mankind,鈥� as our founder, Mary Baker Eddy, put it.
Here, you鈥檒l find award-winning journalism not driven by commercial influences 鈥� a news organization that takes seriously its mission to uplift the world by seeking solutions and finding reasons for credible hope.

John Yemma might not be a household name, but he was a pioneer in journalism鈥檚 shift from print to the internet. When he returned to the Monitor as editor in 2008, after 20 years at The Boston Globe, he saw the potential for a 鈥渨eb-first鈥� news product. Soon after the Monitor鈥檚 100th anniversary, he ended daily print, started a weekly magazine, and leaned in to web journalism.
In my remembrance of John, who died June 10, I look not only at his professional accomplishments but also at him as a person 鈥� calm, smart, generous. As Monitor colleague Ken Kaplan puts it, John was a 鈥済reat human.鈥�
