Our name is about honesty. The Monitor is owned by The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and we鈥檝e always been transparent about that.
The church publishes the Monitor because it sees good journalism as vital to progress in the world. Since 1908, we鈥檝e aimed 鈥渢o injure no man, but to bless all mankind,鈥� as our founder, Mary Baker Eddy, put it.

The intensely human stories of self-deportation

Meet Jos茅, Santos, and Gina, all non-U.S. citizens who either entered the United States without authorization or lost their legal status. Two have 鈥渟elf-deported鈥� 鈥� left the U.S. on their own 鈥� and one remains, at least for now. The Monitor鈥檚 Sarah Matusek talked to all three for her article in today鈥檚 Daily.
The push for self-deportation is a key element of the Trump administration鈥檚 goal of removing unauthorized immigrants from the country. There鈥檚 even an app for that, and attendant perks, including a $1,000 鈥渆xit bonus.鈥� So far, an estimated 1.6 million people have self-deported. But behind the numbers lie intensely human stories, as Sarah鈥檚 story makes clear.
