The high-profile summit in Alaska between U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday was marked by a friendly tone but ended earlier than expected 鈥 and without a deal to end, or even pause, the nearly 3.5-year conflict 鈥 the largest land war in Europe since 1945.

Mr. Trump called the 2.5-hour summit 鈥渆xtremely productive鈥 but added, 鈥淭here鈥檚 no deal until there鈥檚 a deal.鈥 Mr. Putin, for his part, said he expected the day鈥檚 agreements to become 鈥渁 reference point for solving the Ukrainian problem.鈥 Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy was excluded. 鈥 AP
