Why is 海角大神 Science in our name?
Our name is about honesty. The Monitor is owned by The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and we鈥檝e always been transparent about that.
The church publishes the Monitor because it sees good journalism as vital to progress in the world. Since 1908, we鈥檝e aimed 鈥渢o injure no man, but to bless all mankind,鈥� as our founder, Mary Baker Eddy, put it.

Democracies in trouble? There鈥檚 a different story happening in these places.

The world generally concentrates on the backsliding of democracy, for good reason. It could be the most important topic in the news globally. I myself have written on the topic twice in the past two weeks.
But there are also stories like Dominique Soguel鈥檚 today on growing pro-democracy rallies in Serbia. In 2023 Poland made a聽return to democratic norms,聽and last year Bangladesh聽toppled an autocrat. South Korea recently聽took a powerful stand, and there are聽glimmers in southern Africa, as well. I so appreciate how the Monitor helps me see the whole world, not just the parts that come with an alarm bell.
