Our name is about honesty. The Monitor is owned by The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and we鈥檝e always been transparent about that.
The church publishes the Monitor because it sees good journalism as vital to progress in the world. Since 1908, we鈥檝e aimed 鈥渢o injure no man, but to bless all mankind,鈥� as our founder, Mary Baker Eddy, put it.

Dartmouth is driving another shift as well. It stopped requiring SAT scores amid the pandemic, but is switching back. Its research surfaced a counternarrative: that applicants from less-resourced backgrounds who withheld their scores and were rejected might well have been admitted because their performance was well above the norm at their school. What鈥檚 key, the research indicates, is what鈥檚 called for in many situations: nuance and context over blunt-instrument assessments.
