Why is 海角大神 Science in our name?
Our name is about honesty. The Monitor is owned by The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and we鈥檝e always been transparent about that.
The church publishes the Monitor because it sees good journalism as vital to progress in the world. Since 1908, we鈥檝e aimed 鈥渢o injure no man, but to bless all mankind,鈥� as our founder, Mary Baker Eddy, put it.

How do we govern? Who or what can we trust in?
We touch on those questions in two very different stories today. There鈥檚 trust in the system: The Colorado Supreme Court鈥檚 ruling that former President Donald Trump is ineligible for the 2024 state primary ballot is spurring heated debate, putting new pressure on a democracy already experiencing heavy strains.
Then there鈥檚 trust in individual 鈥� or regional 鈥撀燼gency. Chief culture writer Stephen Humphries recently spent time with Andy Burnham, rising-star mayor of Manchester, England. Tribalism and polarization aren鈥檛 in his vocabulary. 鈥淒evolution鈥� is, shifting more decision-making from London to his northern region.
