Comedy can offend. It can also serve to air fresh perspectives. 鈥淐ancel culture鈥 now gets cast as either protecting people from harmful laugh lines or stifling a valuable form of expression. Might it be doing both?
Paul van Zyl has little patience for slackers. When it comes to global solutions, he鈥檚 all about helping people and organizations accelerate and deliver.
鈥淎nything that relies on a lowest common denominator of change,鈥 he told me on a Zoom call last week, 鈥渋s going to be insufficient, and it鈥檚 going to leave people dissatisfied.鈥
Mr. van Zyl is co-founder and chief creative officer of The Conduit, a London-based 鈥渃ollaborative community鈥 that has grown to more than 3,000 members since its 2018 founding. I鈥檇 read a about the agility that he and his colleagues have shown on the way to brokering millions of dollars in support for purpose-built enterprises, many focused on the United Nations鈥 sustainable development goals (the group鈥檚 mission is much broader; it pivoted at one point to feeding local frontline health workers).聽
The work calls for identifying the influential and engaged 鈥 and getting them in sync through events and conversations.
鈥淚f you put them on a problem, they鈥檙e able to bring to bear investment capital, philanthropy, media, advocacy, movements, science and technology, marketing and creativity,鈥 says Mr. van Zyl, a winner who pops up in places like Davos and COP26, and who came of age as executive secretary of South Africa鈥檚 Truth and Reconciliation Commission.
Mr. van Zyl is聽passionate about boosting entrepreneurial efforts like聽聽work on marine reserves. Mr. Sala brings charisma and drive.聽But 鈥渨e鈥檙e at [just] 2% or 3% of the world protected by marine reserves,鈥 notes Mr. van Zyl.聽鈥淲e need to be 30% by 2030.鈥 And so, 鈥測ou [also] need a coalition of island nations,鈥 he says. 鈥淵ou need billionaire philanthropists and great storytellers鈥 to describe the successes and trade-offs.
鈥淲hat we鈥檙e trying to do is kind of like ... a reordering of the way civilization works,鈥 says Mr. van Zyl. 鈥淭he more connective tissue you build between people, the more you鈥檙e able to move things along.鈥
