Our name is about honesty. The Monitor is owned by The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and we鈥檝e always been transparent about that.
The church publishes the Monitor because it sees good journalism as vital to progress in the world. Since 1908, we鈥檝e aimed 鈥渢o injure no man, but to bless all mankind,鈥� as our founder, Mary Baker Eddy, put it.

The West Point cheating scandal and a code of honor

You may have heard that 73 聽by cheating on a calculus test. It鈥檚 the worst cheating scandal at the U.S. Military Academy in 44 years.聽
Oddly, I find that encouraging. Not the cheating, but the enforcement of the honor code.
U.S. taxpayers are providing a free education to the next generation of military leaders. And every student pledges: 鈥淎 cadet will not lie, cheat, steal, or tolerate those who do.鈥�
鈥淭he honor process is working as expected and cadets will be held accountable for breaking the code,鈥� Secretary of the Army Ryan McCarthy said in a statement.
What will happen to them? Most are first-year cadets 鈥� plebes 鈥� and have been enrolled in the academy鈥檚 鈥渨illful admissions鈥� process, a moral rehab program that involves after-hours classes, ethics discussions, and an assigned mentor.
What鈥檚 encouraging is the deep commitment to developing leaders with integrity. That鈥檚 a bedrock value for an institution charged with making life and death decisions in the pursuit of defending America.
Imagine if we held all of our institutions 鈥� and leaders 鈥� to the same standard?
