Our name is about honesty. The Monitor is owned by The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and we鈥檝e always been transparent about that.
The church publishes the Monitor because it sees good journalism as vital to progress in the world. Since 1908, we鈥檝e aimed 鈥渢o injure no man, but to bless all mankind,鈥� as our founder, Mary Baker Eddy, put it.

A national mask mandate? Why Walmart isn鈥檛 waiting.

A family member posted this smile-inducing quote on Facebook Monday:
鈥淐alm down! Walmart is just asking you to wear a mask. You can still wear your pajamas, and leave your bras and teeth at home.鈥�
After talking to family and friends, I'm persuaded that those who refuse to wear a mask in public don鈥檛 trust the pandemic science, coronavirus death tallies, or the news media. Distrust looms large. Most do not know anyone who has experienced COVID-19. They may also have a distaste for the government telling them what to do, especially about health care. In a nation built on the ideal of independence, that should come as no surprise.听
The anti-maskers remind me of those who don鈥檛 trust climate science or vaccines. But surveys show they are a shrinking minority. And as politicians prevaricate on masks, we鈥檙e seeing corporations 鈥� similar to climate policy 鈥� take the lead.
