Our name is about honesty. The Monitor is owned by The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and we鈥檝e always been transparent about that.
The church publishes the Monitor because it sees good journalism as vital to progress in the world. Since 1908, we鈥檝e aimed 鈥渢o injure no man, but to bless all mankind,鈥� as our founder, Mary Baker Eddy, put it.

Julian Edelman starts an uncomfortable conversation about anti-Semitism

You may have heard that DeSean Jackson, the Philadelphia Eagles receiver, was widely criticized for recently posting anti-Semitic comments on social media.听
New England Patriots receiver Julian Edelman hasn鈥檛 said much about his Jewish heritage during his 11-year NFL career. But Edelman鈥檚 response was a 2-minute 30-second Instagram .
He didn鈥檛 respond with anger or derision. He also didn鈥檛 give Jackson a pass: 鈥淎nti-Semitism is one of the oldest forms of hatred. It鈥檚 rooted in ignorance and fear,鈥� he said.
He praised Jackson鈥檚 gridiron feats and looked for common ground. 鈥淚 think the Black and Jewish communities have a lot of similarities. One unfortunate similarity is that they are both attacked by the ignorant and the hateful,鈥� said Edelman.
He goes on to say that real change comes from uncomfortable conversations. He invited Jackson to visit the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in D.C. and suggested Jackson take him to the National Museum of African American History and Culture. 鈥淎nd then afterward we鈥檒l grab some burgers and we鈥檒l have those uncomfortable conversations. This world needs a little more love, compassion, and empathy.鈥�
Jackson has apologized for his posts. Edelman followed up with a phone call, and tweeted Friday they had agreed to 鈥渆ducate one another and grow together.鈥�
Love, compassion, and burgers. That鈥檚 a recipe for ending hate.
