Rob Smart will be home for Christmas.聽

The septuagenarian farmer and his family were evicted at gunpoint in Zimbabwe in June by soldiers, part of a series of 鈥渓and reforms鈥� that stripped commercial farms away from white Zimbabweans without compensation.聽New President Emmerson Mnangagwa 鈥� who came to power last month after former leader Robert Mugabe resigned after 37 years in a de facto coup 鈥� has vowed to reverse such policies to repair the country鈥檚 shattered economy.

As staff writer Ryan Brown wrote in a聽lovely story about babies born聽on the day of Mr. Mugabe鈥檚 resignation, Zimbabweans鈥� faith in a new beginning for their country is tempered by having lived through the disastrous later years of Mugabe鈥檚 government.聽But Mr. Smart鈥檚 case gives him cause for hope. He told Reuters that the new provincial government and local authorities were working to get him back on his farm and recover property that was looted or stolen.

鈥淲e will have a Christmas with no decorations in a house that鈥檚 a bit empty,鈥� Smart said. 鈥淏ut mentally it鈥檚 going to be a [jolly] nice one.鈥�
