US economic woes reflected in national security budget

I鈥檝e been in Newport, RI for the past couple days learning a lot about national security and defense spending鈥揳nd talking about my perspective on the federal
budget outlook鈥揳t a workshop at the on 鈥淓conomics and Security: Resourcing National Priorities.鈥 I鈥檝e been hanging around a small group of very senior military officers, ambassadors, and national security experts, and I鈥檝e been learning a lot. The around 4000-word paper I wrote for the conference is called 鈥淭he Way Out of the Fiscal Hole: An Economist Mom鈥檚 Perspective.鈥 It is sort of a 鈥渂est of EconomistMom.com鈥 paper which I will share here once it鈥檚 published鈥搊r perhaps even post excerpts from beforehand. But mostly what鈥檚 been great about this experience is learning that just because someone is a high-up person in the military doesn鈥檛 mean he or she doesn鈥檛 question the wisdom of the way the U.S. spends money on defense and national security or the federal budget as a whole. There鈥檚 a lot going on within the defense and national security budget that is really just a smaller version of the dysfunction within the federal budget and the U.S. economy as a whole. I hope to share some of what I learn here with my readers when I get back. (I鈥檓 here for one more day.)
