Red Robin "Jim Day": Free burgers for all Jims, Jamies, and Jimbos
Sometimes a good name will take you far. Or, at least, as far as a free lunch.
For Dec. 6聽 only, Red Robin is giving away free a free hamburger to anyone who goes by any iteration of the name Jim. It may seem arbitrary, but the giveaway is part of 鈥�Jim Day,鈥� a promotion for the restaurant chain鈥檚 new Sweet Jim Beam Bacon Swiss Burger.
The burger, available only through Dec. 24, comes topped with bacon, Swiss cheese, and caramelized onions served on a brioche bun toasted with garlic butter. If you aren鈥檛 a Jim, the burger will set you back about $10.聽
Here鈥檚 how it works: Show up to any participating Red Robin, present a valid form of ID with the first name 鈥淛im鈥� or any derivation thereof (acceptable monikers include James, Jamie, Jaime, Jaimie, Jami, Jamey, Jameson, Jimmy, Jimmi, Jimi,and Jimbo), and claim your free burger. It鈥檚 worth mentioning that Red Robin has one of the funnier legal disclaimers we鈥檝e seen in a while at the bottom of the 鈥淛im Day鈥� ad: 鈥淟egal ID verifying your Jimship must be provided in-restaurant to qualify.鈥�
The deal doesn鈥檛 include fries or a drink.
If you are a Jim planning to enjoy a free burger today, you might want to get in on the action early: According to US Census data, James was the single most common first name among men of all age groups in the United States as late as 1990, and Red Robin is a sit-down restaurant.
The Red Robin burger deal is just the latest in a long tradition of name-associated promotional giveaways. In 2009, Pizza hut offered a free medium one-topping pizza to anyone named either John or Sarah Connor, 聽the names of the heroes of the 鈥淭erminator鈥� movies, as a cross promotion with the 2009 film 鈥�Terminator: Salvation.鈥� Also in 2009, Macy鈥檚 gave away free $10 gift certificates to people with either the first or last name 鈥�Virginia鈥� to promote a TV special about the little girl who wrote a famous letter to Santa Claus. If your name happens to be Isabella, you get free admission for life to Boston鈥檚 Isabella Stewart Gardner museum.
Unfortunately, not all name giveaways apply equally: The barbecue restaurant chain Famous Dave鈥檚, celebrates 鈥淒ave鈥檚 Day鈥� each August, giving away a free entr茅e to people named Dave, David, or Davy.聽 Those with 鈥淒ave鈥� as a middle name only get half off their meals.
