From its humble beginnings as a frontier outpost, San Angelo was home to a famous African-American military unit known as the Buffalo Soldiers. In the 20th century, San Angelo boomed as an oil town. Today, still buoyed by the oil industry as well as a strong health-care industry, its claim to fame could very well be its low foreclosure rate. At 1.5 percent, it’s the fifth lowest rate in the country.
